No Vivaldi on my laptop
-
Hi, I have a laptop, not the newest one, but working Fine. It is an MSI CX600 with 4 GB internal memory.
OS system is Linux Xubuntu 64bit.
As the title says, no Vivaldi on my laptop.
Firefox is working fine, but any other browser is giving problems. Installation goes fine, I can open them but I cannot work on them.
I have tried Vivaldi of course, but I have the same problems with Chromium and Opera.
If I try to do something in any browser I mentioned the system freezes, I cannot maximize nor minimize.
As I said Firefox goes without any problems, but I 'd rather have Vivaldi.Who knows how to fix this?
Regards,
Ton.

@vissertw

Post it.
Make sure your system,drivers are up to date.

There must be other reasons than a low power, My laptop is maybe even older than yours and with 32 bits, equally with an Ubuntu distro (Kubuntu) and Vivaldi works great and fast, even better than the Firefox that includes Kubuntu by default

It looks like no other browser then the in built Firefox will install properly.
I will give it a last try with Brave later today.I might have a hint, that is to say, it was not possible to install the latest version of Ubuntu or Mint on this laptop, it went wrong and I have done Linux installations for many years now.
The only thing that was to install properly was the latest Xubuntu.

@vissertw
Is it may possible to add the Vivaldi repository to your system with Software Center or what it calls?
When you try to install Vivaldi with it you may get relevant error information.
I have no idea why it not should work on Xubuntu.
Will try later in a Virtual Box.Cheers, mib

vissertjes@vissertjes-CX600:~$So I think I should give it a try now, I will be back.
It does not work, I can open Vivaldi, but I cannot work in it, the only thing I can do is minimize and maximize, but after that I have two Vivaldi screens. Vivaldi opened in three tab blades, but I cannot select the first two, it opened in the third but the rest of the screen remains grey, no text or pictures.
Besides that I cannot close Vivaldi in any way, it stays in the working space.Ton.
-
Unfortunately it will not work, the system gets more or less freezing, I have to restart the laptop to get it working again. After the restart I get the message some system fail is discovered, it does not say any details, I can report the fail which I did.
Like I mentioned before, Firefox is working fine.
Have you read my older message about not be able to install the latest Ubuntu or Mint on this laptop by the way?
I have never experienced this before. And I have installed both Ubuntu and Mint many years now on several computers.Could these two problems have the same cause? As I mentioned before, Firefox is the inbuilt browser in Xubuntu.
I have been reading about Brave browser, had a look on their website, they have a note in which they mention sandbox, sandbox was pointed as an error amongst others in the terminal on this laptop yesterday.

@vissertw
Something is wrong with your system.
I test Vivaldi in a frech Xubuntu installation, like @Gwen-Dragon mention, in Virtualbox, it work fine.Cheers, mib
-
If you mention a possible fault in my system, do you mean the laptop, or the installation of Xubuntu? I do get a message after each startup but no details.
But how is it possible then everything else is working fine?Ton.
-
@vissertw
I guess it is may the GPU made problems.
As I am German I understand most of the messages from terminal, went all fie so far.
Is chromium browser in the repository?
I cant boot my Workstation at moment to look for it.
If you install chromium may other dependencies are installed, too.
If chromium work and Vivaldi not I am out of ideas.Cheers, mib
-
Good morning mib,
Could the GPU also be the problem I had when I tried to install the latest Ubuntu and Mint?
And because Xubuntu is said to be lighter will install on my laptop?
I am beginning to realize that I have to accept the restriction of my laptop.
I am going to use it during my vacation this summer in Sweden, it works fine with Xubuntu so I will leave it this way.Thanks for all the help,
Regards,
Ton.
-
Is this of any help? It is a rather old desktop indeed, but I only use it during vacation in Sweden every summer.
As I said before it works fine with Xubuntu, only restriction is I cannot use another browser then Firefox.vissertjes@vissertjes-CX600:~$

Here's his specs from the MSI website: https://www.msi.com/Laptop/CX600/Specification
Intel Core 2 Duo processor
ATI Mobility Radeon HD4300 Graphics
(They list it as coming with Vista installed)
He did specify 4 GB RAMHe'll have to tell us his actual version of Xubuntu, and perhaps why he can't install the latest version.
You think he might have more luck with the 32-bit version?
-
@sgunhouse I did install the latest version of Xubuntu, I did not succeed installing the latest version of Ubuntu or Mint.
Xubuntu is running fine, but no possibility of installing a second browser. -
@Gwen-Dragon Sorry but I do not understand what to do with your suggestions.
About the H.264 video, should I copy paste it in the terminal? And the other tip, the output of section, likewise, copy paste in terminal?
