Vivaldi name sounds really weird
-
Who came up with this name? It just sounds bad.
-
You can thank the founders of the company. Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) was a currently-esteemed baroque classical music composer who wrote a variety of music, including many operas. It makes as much sense for a browser name as Opera did.

What's wrong with that ?
Vivaldi 's an Italian second name, Opera is an Italian word. Blackbird already explained who Vivaldi was.
The world is plenty of products using Italian words as brands or model names, often faked Italian words (meaningless names who sounds like Italian words) so how we could be worried about some real ones like Opera, Vivaldi or Sonata ? (the latter just to stay in theme)

I like the name, although I'm not a great fan of Baroque period music. Vivaldi is a better choice for the new browser than Beethoven or Chopin, however. As already mentioned it cleverly but subtly suggests the new browsers connection to Opera. Calling it Sonata or Symphony would have been too obviously derivative.
-
I gather that Jon S von Tetzchner was raised by his grandparents, one of whom was the daughter of a well-known composer. It would seem he was raised with classical music. This is probably how Opera got its name.
Vivaldi was a composer and author of several operas - so the naming of this browser after a creator of opera is a bit of delicious irony.
-
Calling it Sonata or Symphony would have been too obviously derivative.
Sonata is already used by a car (funnily enough in Italian "sonata" has a double meaning… it means also something like "badly beaten"/"left in the dust" :cheer: )
Symphony is already used by the well known Lotus/IBM suite, so is a no go. Sinfonia could be an option but maybe would be confusing, given the close resemblance with the English word.
Other classic music related words, like "Concerto" or "Aria" , are also used for various products and/or SW.
So Vivaldi makes sense, is unique, related to Opera, and not overexposed.
-
I disagree, Vivaldi is a great name for it. It's referential to opera without being too derivative, and is unique. It's a hell of a lot more refined and dignified than Microsoft mining 'GOTY by Mt. Dew and Doritos' Halo for names for its products.

Hm just to give my 2 cents, I really don't like the name as well. I think it sounds a bit pretentious, doesnt it? I'd prefer the browser to have a more 'technical' name. If we really have to name it after a historical figure, why not Turing or something alike? Also I don't like the thumbnail, but thats again just a personal feeling and I have no idea how to improve it.
But then again, its just a browser and just a name so I don't really care, vivaldi works just as fine as any other name
-
It's in the same tone with "Opera", moreover we all know Vivaldi started with the intention to become what Opera is currently failing to be. At least it can't be confusing as Opera - I've read of people going to opera.com thinking it's Oprah Winfrey's personal site.

I disagree. What's pretentious about culture and art, or any less pretentious about a technical name or a historical figure that evokes it? And technology is fetishized enough on the internet as is. Tetzchner's decision to first use Opera and now Vivaldi is a reference to his own upbringing and a purposeful departure from the norm, and I welcome it.
-
@buddybubble - name a browser with a 'technical' name.
-
FireFox… (fire - fox... very technical ), Safari... well, another technical name Opera... it has been said here, also "technical"... chrome is just pointing out that all is simple... which might be technical, OK. IE is simply named what can be done with the browser. Exploring Internet. One and only technical and most hated browser so...
but anyway, I really like naming this browser Vivaldi. Weird name is for example "Bertha" to me not Vivaldi...

@Ralf-Brinkmann:
"Grytznbrützl"? Sounds very unique and technical, doesn't it?
Grytznbrütz by von Tetzchnerl would be easier to pronounce… :lol:
-
It just sounds bad.
No, it doesn't: might it depend on the way you pronounce it?
Here's a good Vivaldi's pronunciation!

Extremely well known part from "The four seasons" -
I actually like it. For musicians it makes for a great email address

Another bit of "delicious irony" is that Vivaldi (the composer) fell out of classical favor for many years after his death, but in the 20th century, came back into wide popularity as he was "rediscovered" by classical performers and fans. It sounds a bit like a certain person behind a certain pair of browsers, eh?
