W10 Home once more refuses to see Vivaldi as option for opening .mht/.mhtml files
-
I've had this problem before, and eventually it went away again. Now here it is again: the list of programs available for opening .mht/.mhtml files - such as, well, for example, the ones I am constantly downloading with Vivaldi - the list of available programs has three 'options': Eudora (I don't think so! :-), Internet Explorer, and, er, the shop...
I assume it has to do with the update I received a few days ago - after I'd had to go back and create a restore point.
Anyone a solution? I tried getting MS to ring me back, which they tried about six times and then, thank goodness, they abandoned the attempt.

@Gwen-Dragon Either I just don't understand something or it's just too late at night, but when I try the cmd.exe method I get an error message. I have no idea where to find the context menu in Explorer... I'll take another look tomorrow. Thanks for your response anyway Gwen-Dragon (you're Welsh, I assume?).
Why have MS made something so simple so complex? Actually, in my computer it's all very simple - until you run across something like this. I mean, why the hell does W10 accept Vivaldi as my browser while failing to acknowledge its existence in the assigning apps to file types menu? Bnockers (and no, that's not a typo). -
@Gwen-Dragon Thanks for reporting that. Maybe they'll get round to it some day.
Your suggestion 'If you have a .mht file point on it and open context menu with right mouse button, → "Open with…". → Choose an other App → More Apps
You get a list, scroll down and chrose a app on the PC.
Then you can select the vivaldi.exe.'looks very promising, but Vivaldi simply isn't on the list. When I tried the last-ditch option of looking somewhere else in the computer I was taken to a folder full of subfolders, none of which had anything to do with Vivaldi. This is really very, very annoying. I am constantly saving web pages in .mhtml and constantly opening them. Now every time I try it takes an age for Internet Explorer or whatever it's called these days to open.

@Gwen-Dragon Excellent! I've located Vivaldi.exe at C:\Users\Harry\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\Application\vivaldi.exe
but even that doesn't impress W10...
Thanks again for your efforts! -
It used to be the case that right-clicking on a file (in this case MHT) and choosing
Properties > General > Opens with > Change > More apps > Look for another
would just work, but I’ve seen it start failing on the Education edition, too.I’ve also had some success at changing associated apps with a third-party app (but that’s not very user-friendly).

@Dantesoft Yup, I tried that (Gwen-Dragon suggested it), but it didn't work. Then I thought I'd give MS Help a shot. Had an interesting session with a Cristhian (sic) Neal there. He suggested taking control but I wasn't too keen on that and had other things to do, but the chat was still useful, largely because he suggested booting in safe mode - something I hadn't done for at least ten years I should think. Still, I tried it, messed about a bit, then rebooted in normal mode. This time I was amazed to find that I was able to enter the whole string C:\Users\Harry\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\Application\vivaldi.exe for mhtml files - and it was accepted - and it Worked! Then when I moved up the list to mht it spontaneously changed from MS to Vivaldi. Whether this is coincidence and somehow the wizards in Vivaldi HQ had fixed it w/o my noticing I know not, but I suspect not.
The bottom line is that it's fixed, but I'm not entirely sure how or why! I'm crossing fingers though, just to be sure.
Thanks for your reply Dantesoft!

I seem to be able to do this. I vaguely remember setting it in Vivaldi:Flags.
I found a corresponding Registry Key if you want to go that route but I think that is what the Flag sets(?).
If Flags doesn't work, then though the command, for now, I guess.Vivaldi 2.4.1468.4 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Latest Snapshot[EDIT] Last nite just got latest MS Win10 Home updates. Still will work but not as Default viewer (tose wereIE and Opera). I chose Openwith > Other Program > navigate to the Vivaldi.exe and voilà! There it is in Open With IE, Opera, Vivaldi.

@Gwen-Dragon said in W10 Home once more refuses to see Vivaldi as option for opening .mht/.mhtml files:
did you select to always open mhtml with Vivaldi?
I certainly did. That was the whole point. I have a really very, very slow computer - I have to wait for mousing over something to work sometimes - and it was a real pain having to wait for IE to wind itself up and open the mhtml file I wanted to see. I've no doubt this will happen again some time, but I've now a) saved this page and b) put a link to this page in my glossary in WordPerfect (currently 895 pages or thereabouts in 10pt Calibri (designed by a Dutchman I believe; I myself am not Dutch - not yet, anyway - but I like living here (just celebrated 50 years)).

To assign default apps by file type in Windows 10:
Settings>Apps>Default apps>Choose default apps by file type
-
@Gwen-Dragon Just to be perfectly clear: what I did was enter the entire path to the executable, i.e. in this case C:\Users\Harry\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\Application\vivaldi.exe
Incidentally I have v. 1803, OS build 17134.590
