Exploit that bug: The untold story of Auto-Stacking
-
Vivaldi is the first browser to introduce auto tab stacking but did you know that it owes its life to a good karma bug?

This is an interesting note of software archaeology. Thanks for sharing.
-
Slight correction: Thanks to INI hacking capabilities it was possible up to O 12. Once you got the concept of auto stacking you could write a very convoluted sequence of commands and add some bit of (correctly double escaped) Javascript to the mix to get the same effect. Yes, it was a horrible hack and did not work on every page, but it was fun to do
-
@quhno: And of course you would have done that!
-
Martin Kadlec / BSHarou is also a Vivaldi volunteer and I see his is listed in my friends list on the archive of my old blog post.
-
@ruario It was a challenge and of course I did! Back then I did not write the buttonator for nothing!
Maybe you have seen my "I suffer with buttonitis" screenshot with its 28 custom buttons and the reworked Neanderthal 7 skin (ported from O7, all skulls and bones ) in the old forums.
-
@quhno: I guess we should not bring custom buttons back. God knows what you will do if given that power

This could be a whole new topic. “When is a bug a feature?” or even “When is a feature a bug?”
In FontCreator, the Shortcut "h" hides all guidelines and metrics lines as long as it is held down. However, Alt+H also hides them, and keeps them hidden after clicking or hitting Esc to close the help menu. Press the "h" shortcut shows them again. I found this unplanned behaviour useful, so the developer never fixed the bug.
For me, the way that Auto-stacking currently works is more like a bug than a feature. It just does not work consistently.
- GestureDown = Open Link in New Background Tab (over a link) stacks the new tab with the active tab
- GestureUp = Open a Link in New Tab (over a link) opens the new tab outside of the stack
- Opening a New Tab from a link in a Web Panel from the context menu opens the new tab stacked with the active tab.
This "bug" clearly needs some more work before announcing it as a "feature."

@ruario: The same stuff I do now with extensions, only better?
-
@lonm: Software archeology
-
@ruario: And I am still using his great "Smart RSS" extension in Vivaldi
-
I remember those days (still have some of the desktop backgrounds from Opera Presto days).
9.5 beautifully engineered
9.6 Making you faster
10.50 The fastest browser on Earth
10.60 What is faster than fastest?I transferred MyOpera blog I had over there to Vivaldi's and there is some 'archaeology' of old posts.
-
@ruario: custom buttons are essential part of configurable browser
or to be precise: custom commands that can be assigned to hotkeys, gestures and buttons -
Smart RSS is only as good as M2 was (or slightly worse as chromium extensions api is miserable)
it could get some UX improvements definitely, though I never had enough motivation for deep dive into that (especially that I don't use chromium based browser as my main one due to API limitations exactly, well, not only that actually) -
@martins: oh, I found it finally: while he added MIT license as last commit headers in source say that you aren't allowed to use any part of his code in extensions for other browsers, I'm not sure if adding MIT license invalidates these headers nor if loading his package in other browsers count as violating these though

Wow que interessante esse recurso, é de ótima utilidade para mim (que sou estudante). @ruario sempre nós surpreendendo, obrigado por mais um recurso amigo!
Wow that interesting this feature, is of great use to me (that I am student). @ruario always surprising us, thanks for another friend resource! This is the question that does not want to shut up what else is coming? -
Opera 10.70 Never forget
-
Oh, I found it! It was already implemented as a feature (for a brief while) in 2010: https://web.archive.org/web/20101210135027/http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/2010/12/06/extension-improvements-updates-to-core-and-some-other-nice-fixes
-
@pepkin88: Aaaand they were disabled a week later: https://web.archive.org/web/20110711034741/http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/2010/12/14/stacking
-
I liked Opera's auto-stacking and was disappointed when it was retracted. Since then I kept asking for it at Opera forums and then at Vivaldi forums.
Finally you have brought it back! Thank you!
