Solved 2.3.1430.4 Vivaldi instantly crashes whenever I try to open the Private Window and problem with spellcheck
-
Everytime time I click at the "New Private Window" Vivaldi instantly crashes. Also, when having two different languages set in the spellchecker (currently Greek and English) most of the time Vivaldi doesn't display any spelling mistakes, and if it does, it's really slow in doing that.
I'm running Vivaldi Snapshot 2.3.1430.4 on Windows 10 Home (latest version of Windows 10).
-
They've fixed the problem with the latest update. No crashes since then. Awesome!
-
Multi-lingual spell-check is working OK here when I enable spell-check in all languages. I don't have Greek installed, but I do have Italian, French, and Russian installed, besides English and American.

@meymigrou Known bug for 2 snapshot builds now, as you can see in the snapshot sub-category https://forum.vivaldi.net/category/83/snapshots For me deleting the cookies and going with the rules "allow all"&"block 3rd party" eliminated the problem, but didn't work for others.

I am using the same Vivaldi version (2.3.1430.4 (Official Build) (64-bit)) and Win 10 Home (after the latest 5 hour update) and have no problems opening New Private Window(s)...
the spellcheck (English) seems to work OK. at least I haven/t noticed any issues.

I can confirm the crash of the private window. It happens every time in the last 2 snapshots 1420.4 & 1430.4.

Maybe try refreshing your profile. I'm not getting a single crash since 2 SS updates, I had to refresh my profile with previous updates tho else it would crash often.
-
What do you mean by refreshing the profile and what info will be lost (sessions, passwords, etc.)?
-
@rhk https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/10388/refreshing-or-cleaning-your-profile
Basically, it involves renaming (and saving) your Vivaldi profile (configuration) directory, getting Vivaldi back into a like-new state, and then selectively restoring data from your previous profile.

The list of files and directories to save is still incomplete in the help page. I've reported it already but no action has been taken yet.
Make sure to also save file_mapping.json as it contains the path of your custom Speed Dial Thumbnails.
So the complete list is:
"Extension Rules"
"Extension State"
Extensions
"Local App Settings"
"Local Extension Settings"
"Local Storage"
"Managed Extension Settings"
Sessions
Bookmarks
Cookies
"Current Session"
"Extension Cookies"
History
"Login Data"
Notes
Preferences
"Secure Preferences"
"Top Sites"
"Web Data"
"Last Session"
"Last Tabs"
file_mapping.jsonEdit: and from Vivaldi 2.4 also

Okay, did create a fresh profile. No change, a new private window opens briefly and crashes about 1-2 seconds later. Any other ideas?
-
@rhk I just checked and there is a new open confirmed bug for a crash that triggers after opening a private window... looks like it might be related to Sync.

@Gwen-Dragon: @xyzzy said in Vivaldi instantly crashes whenever I try to open the Private Window and problem with spellcheck:

Seems to be correct. No more crashes for about half an hour since deactivating the syncing data by removing the checkmarks. Still testing this.

Her too, so far no more crashes in 1435.4. Great job!

@iAN-CooG Important new [to me] info... https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/286277 ...
The VivaldiThumbnails folder seems to be the best candidate.
...for existing speedial thumbnails [not custom ones, just all those generated via F5].
