Often cannot print

Hi Guys,

I am running Vivaldi 2.1 on a Win 7 64 bit machine. Got enough RAM. I monitor and control my running processes, etc.

Anyway, sporadically, about 10-20% of the time, on certain pages of various websites (ex: BestBuy, CNBC, etc), I cannot print the page. The print preview hangs up. I usually print to a pdf but changing pdf or physical printers does not help.

SO then I am forced to print from another browser. Opera and Chrome print the pages fine. BUT I like Vivaldi and would prefer to stick there.

On a search of the forum, I found a person with a similar issue:

I hope you can give me some hints, or if it is a bug, then add it to the bug file.

Just came here to report similar.
I print to .PDF daily.
I updated to the new update Friday or Saturday, getting back to work tonight, tried to print and it just hangs.
Tried it several different times, it eventually crashed the whole browser.
I'll have to either see if I can roll back, or jump to another browser until it gets fixed since i use the web for business.

Bummer.

@rdreammaker HM. Can't reproduce the problem here. All printing functions work fine, including save as PDF. Of course I don't have Win 8.1. Don't know anyone who does. I tested in Win7 and Win10.

Perhaps someone who has Win 8.1 can come along and try to reproduce it.

Unless somebody else is faster than me I'll test this when I come home (still about 10 hours to go) as I should still have one machine running on win 8.1.

@rdreammaker As temporary workaround does the system-print-command still work for you? "Ctrl+Shift+P"
And does the issue appear on all sites or should I try this on a specific website?

I started this thread.
I tried the "Ctrl+Shift+P", and all I get is a perpetual spooling message from my pdf printer.
I'm running Win7 Pro
The issue appears on certain web pages of major sites.
From now on, I'll try to add those links here as I run across them.
[BTW -- all the pages print on other Chrome engine browsers.]

Yes I know ^^ no worries - I was just responding to @rdreammaker because he has the same / some similar problem as you experience but on a win 8.1 machine so I volunteered to test this after work on my win 8.1 machine.

So far every website I tried, about 15 in total, worked with Crtl+P as well as with Ctrl+Shift+P. (including target.com)

A question that just came to my mind is: What security software do you two use?

You and I are running different OS.
For security I run NIS on a Win7 Pro machine and keep it updated.
My point is that these pages print on every other browser I use -- Chrome, Opera, FFx

I have found more fail-to-print pages and have emailed them to the Vivaldi team.
I might guess that it is a simple fix, but hard to find! (Hope not the latter.)

Wondering if this issue has gotten resolved in a recent update since I last posted the problem I was having with it.
I dropped back to an archived version I've kept of Vivaldi 2.0.1309.37 (Stable channel) (64-bit) after my original post which resolved the issue for me immediately, which is what I needed since I use Vivaldi for my businesses. Haven't had any kind of problems since dropping back to 2.0.1309.37 (Stable channel) (64-bit) but that sort of defeats the purpose of updates which I have been ignoring all new updates since I first has the issue and had to fall back to a known stable version.

So to answer the question about using the hot keys to print, I didn't test it, unfortunately I had a bunch of money sitting on the table when I came to look for answers originally and had to take immediate actions, so I dropped to a stable version I keep archived of 2.0.1309.37 (Stable channel) (64-bit).
I use the "Print" feature within the page similar to how you would select a printer. It shows up as a .pdf printer.
Since Vivaldi is built on chromium and basically just runs on top of it, there must have been something turned off in the underside of Chromium.
I wouldn't expect most Vivaldi users to run into the problem since most users probably do not print to .pdf to create legal documentation all day long.

Thanks for looking into it.
I'll wait a few more updates I guess before I update again, since it was a real hassle to get everything set-back up when I had to downgrade.

Hi, for the next time install Vivaldi as Standalone with "Advanced" (or similar) during installation.
You get a new profile and you can sync it with the old one to get most settings and bookmarks, passwords back.
It is possible to work with several different Vivaldi versions in parallel.

Hi RD,
I started this thread and continue to report examples of the print spooling bug to the Vivaldi team. I may have to downgrade too if not fixed soon.
IF your issue is NOT the print spooling bug but rather printing to a pdf, Vivaldi has a super save to pdf function (find it in Destination when you print). It's actually one of the best versions I've found (and I have many).

Vivaldi is great for research and printing to PDFs. However, the print spooling bug appears on so many sites that, sadly, i will have to stop using vivaldi until the bug is fixed.

I'll keep checking in to see when the fix is complete.

@beansandfranks Since you reported the bug, you need to wait for it to be fixed. There is no need to remind anyone that is not fixed.

They will be fixed when the developers have time.

The Vivaldi Team are now on their Christmas break, so not much will happen for at least a few weeks.

I wish to add my voice as having this problem --

This "Save As PDF" feature is really the Main feature that got me using Vivaldi again about 6 months ago, b/c I am also one of those who prints webpage articles to pdf at least 25-50 times/day.

I wish I'd made an accurate log entry of when I began to have this same problem, but basically it was "upgrading" from version 1.x to version 2.

My odd experience was that, at that time, w/ v.1x, Vivaldi would flawlessly "Save As PDF", whilst Chrome would spin/spool forever --
and now the situation is exactly reversed - Chrome will print nearly flawlessly and very rapidly, whilst Vivaldi is crippled.

I only wish I had the coding skills to contribute to a solution!

The "Save As PDF" functionality of the printing system/subsystem is amazing for those of us who like all clickable links - including embedded links -
preserved in our printouts -- which is something even the mighty Adobe browser plugin cannot and does not achieve!

@brog2cairn A possible workaround is to enable Reader View on that page, then Print to PDF Destination. That works, and links are preserved, but layout may not be right.

Capture Page preserves the layout, but not the text, nor the links.

and from two last updates I can't print from bank website. There is infinite long print view generating.
When I close tab with that, there is an error saying there is something wrong with printer - (it's not)

Wow this bug is extremely annoying - so far it looks as if Vivaldi has two ridiculous shortcomings which the original Opera browser never had:

You can very very often (at least 20% of the cases) not print a website and have to use chrome for that task.
The bookmark bar does not have a context menu and is almost unusable.

As a developer I do not believe the codebase of Vivaldi to be that bad, that at least the 2nd mentioned feature cannot be implemented in a matters of minutes (the context menu functionality exists for the sidebar, so there is no new functionality involved). And with respect to this extreme Bug - you cannot develop a browser for power users and prevent them to work as power users do. I love the browser and will try to suffer through the time where I have to use chrome every few ours. I hope you fix this!
