Solved Rename "Clone Tab" to "Duplicate Tab"
-
It's not something I feel strongly about, but I think it's a good idea to rephrase "clone tab" to "duplicate tab" for clarity and user-friendliness. "Clone" is visually similar to "close," and when you're moving quickly, it's easy to select the wrong one by accident. Just a thought.

The change has been implemented in Vivaldi 5.6. Read more about the new version on our blog: https://vivaldi.com/blog/vivaldi-5-6-on-desktop/.
-
The items are far apart in different groups on the context menu.
IMO "Clone" is a better description of what the function does, as the entire back/forward history of the tab is duplicated.
I don' t feel strongly about it either, but the generic feature request for Allow Editing of Menus already covers this for those who want to change it.
Changing defaults needs a strong case to support it because users get accustomed to the default naming conventions, and translators also may have more work to do if the English name is changed.

@dannyromano
I do feel strongly about this. I was test driving Vivaldi for a second time yesterday and was floored when I could not find the "duplicate" tab button that I am so used to on Chrome. I'm not saying that everything has to be like Chrome but, it does not hurt to copy the best features and no rewrite the book just to be different when it comes to this functionality. It is confusing to see clone and close in that menu and like you said when you are in a hurry it is easy to miss. -
@radiotecha1234 Vivaldi is being developed by Jon von Tetzchner, the founder of Opera. The term used in Opera is "Clone Tab," so he should copy the best features from Opera, including Follower Tabs

@pesala
The problem with your thinking is that both Chrome and Firefox (even Opera) uses "Duplicate", and a lot of people use them. On the other hand, no one uses the olt Opera anymore. This is a small thing, but can be very annoying for people wanting to switch to Vivaldi.
-
@nekomajin I would be annoyed by decisions being made on the basis of Chrome or Firefox users. Jon's building Vivaldi for Old Opera users. The linked thread to allow editing of menus solves the problem for everyone without annoying long-term Opera and Vivaldi users.
-
@pesala
But it will take years to implement the feature to edit menus, so it's pointless to refer to that request in every thread related to menus. -
If the developers are adamant about keeping "clone tab" for one of the reasons proposed above, they should at least consider adding simple icons to the menu to make the options more visually distinct.
-
@dannyromano I don't suppose the developers feel that strongly about it. If enough user upvote the request, they may consider it.
The feature request Show Icons in Context Menu has already been made. I think that would be a big improvement to several menus, especially the Search With Menu where some users have a lot of search engines.

While I am used to "Clone Tab" as a long-time Opera user, and was opposed to the idea of changing it at first thought, I realize it would certainly be a better to change it to "Duplicate Tab". As a UX designer I believe this to be the truth. The intention behind Vivaldi is to continue the development of the old Opera, however to imitate a quirk of the old Opera, simply for imitation's sake, does not make much sense. Vivaldi should give a very smooth on-boarding experience to new users, and leaving the name as "Clone" is akin to the plethora of Linux software packages that seem to use non-conventional wordings and icons seemingly just for the sake of being different (e.g Gimp)
-
I'd support this change. As people say, "Clone" and "Close" are visually too similar.
It's true that "Clone" and "Close" are located far apart in the context menu on Vivaldi, but "Close" is the 2nd item on Safari (which doesn't have a Duplicate functionality), so Safari users coming to Vivaldi may well be confused.
Another example is iTerm2. On its context menu, "Duplicate Tab" comes next to (or below) "Close Tab".
I'm afraid that catering for the former Opera users is a weak argument, because even the former Opera users would not be confused by "Duplicate Tab".
Personally I find the term "clone" charming and "duplicate" boring, but that charm shouldn't be a valid reason for causing a usability problem.
Of course, this isn't a major issue at all.
-
Is minor but annoying just the same - how about calling it 'Clone This Tab' ?
-
Call it anything cool - Carbon, Mirror etc, but leaving it as Clone that looks the same as Close is stupid -full stop!
-
Just this morning I selected 27 tabs, saved them to a session, then inadvertently "clone"d these tabs. Needless to say I experienced much frustration having to wait for the duplicating process to complete, then delete 54 tabs )-:
Please, PLEASE change this menu item.
P.S. I am an IT worker. -
@dockmartin Go to Settings, Appearance, Menu Customisation, and edit the Tab Context menu to suit your workflow. I never use Clone Tab, so I removed it. Short menus are much faster to navigate without errors.
I have some Command Chains named Split Horizontally and Split Vertically to Clone the Current Tab and tile the clone with the active tab. I assigned shortcuts Shift+H and Shift+V to those.
The default menu has several items that I never use.

Marking this as a "solution" for better visibility:
This is now possible, as all the items on context menus can be moved, removed or renamed.
Go to Settings > Appearance > Menu > Menu customization, choose "Tab" from the drop-down list and rename the "Clone Tab" command to anything you like.

Marking this request as "Done"
Please don't. Until/unless the settings (preferences) can be shared by different Profiles, customization is an annoying solution. Not just for this issue, but for all other issues.
I have three Profiles and I have three machines. Only my "main" Profile is sync'ed. That means, I have to repeat the same customization 7 times!
Each time a customization is presented as a solution, I have to sigh . . .
-
@ryofurue It looks like the solution for your issue would be implementing something like this rather than changing one menu item arbitrarily for all users.

You need to keep in mind that there's no universal setting that fits everyone - that's why Vivaldi is all about customization and continues to progress in that direction.

Until that feature is implemented, a feature request shouldn't be marked as "Done" on the grounds of Customization. Don't you think so?
-
Please read through this thread again.
- The only argument for "Clone" is just nostalgia from a minority of users.
- The argument for "Duplicate" is a real usability problem and consistency with other applications.
Therefore, there is no question that "Clone" should be replaced with "Duplicate".
It's the nostalgia which should be catered for by Customization.
"Clone" should be replaced with "Duplicate" by default, and people who prefer "Clone" should use Customization to get it back.

@ryofurue Sure, we can restore the request. Perhaps it will gather more upvotes, as it didn't seem to get much traction so far. Menu customization will stay as the proposed solution for now.
