[Feature Request] Best of the best: Opera Presto Features
-
I will make it simple: (note: by "Presto" I mean old Opera line up to 12.17) [ul] [li]1. Built in local RSS-reader. I don't really care about mail client, but RSS thing was PRICELESS. [/li] [li]2. Built-in Presto-alike cookie management. By this very moment Opera's cookie manager still one of the best. It featured not just the ability to see detailed info about cookie or modify it. but you also could specify default POLICY (or per-domain) for cookies: "ask before accepting cookies". I love this feature to death. Been using for the last few years. [/li] [li]3.Ability to modify the UI and buttons to the extent similar to O12 (place anywhere, add/remove any buttons even the critical ones) [/li] [li]4.Ability to have per-domain (page) properties a-la O12 (disable/enable plugins,. JS, broswer data spoofing, etc)[/li] [li]5.Built-in, fast content/url-blocking mechanism (O12 featured only URL blocking, but it wasn't JS based and worked quite fast before any requests were made)[/li] [li]6. Presto caching mechanism. That shit was and is amazing, Still BEST caching mechanism ever, not a single modern browser tops the way old Opera works with cache[/li] [li]7. Global ability to enable/disable plugin or load by request, old good images policy: cached, disabled, show all; quick Javascript engine on/off toggle, quick proxy on/off toggle, disable animated images, etc[/li] [li]8. Built-in Sessions mechanism a-la O12 (save and manage session, restore last known good after crash etc)[/li] [li]9. Tab cycle and preview modes a-la O12 ( tab cycle "last used" or linear tab order. [/li] [li]10. No goddamn limits for the "closed tabs" list. Yes, Chrome, I'm looking at you, with your laughable 10 entries.[/li] [li]11. Ability to modify keyboard shortcuts the way you want[/li] [li]12. "Open in background tab" feature as well as hotkey for it (ctrl+shit+click) [/li] [/ul] This barely makes half of my favorite features from old Opera. Yet most of them still very unique and nor Chrome nor Firefox with any extensions can make it even close. Truly a shame they had to die with Opera... unless they didn't have to? I'd love to see some of them resurrected in Viv.
-
+1 to many of these. So many people keep repeating they want the features Opera 12 had. They were great ideas then - and are great ideas now. Opera 12 was obviously well loved by power users.
-
my favorite missing feature from Opera12 was actually the "copy to note" menu item. Vivaldi brings back a note system, but its still cut and paste…need to simplify to "copy to not"
-
Yeah, that one was really handy too.
-

But did you try Vivaldi before writing your post ?
Some of you requested functions are already present, some are partly implemented, some will surely be implemented in the future.
-
Things that meant the most to me:
Ability to turn on or off and place anywhere, every panel, toolbar and button of the UI, and to re-size UI elements.
Integrated mail client that was smooth, fast, capable, and could handle huge volumes of mail without a huge resource drain, and which relied on "views" rather than copies in files to organize mail
Plaintext highlight and copy
Ability to assign desired favicon to any bookmark, and to display bookmarks on a toolbar without labels
Ability to install space-saving and/or simplifying skins so as to remove clutter from the interface, and to pick whatever color scheme over all was easiest on your (the individual user's) eyes.
Save page as MHTML
Ability to set speed dial as home page
That's all I can think of at the moment.

Actually implemented only tab cycle order and "last closed tab" takes old place. The "closed tabs" list seems pretty big too. That's all.
Partially exist keyboard shortcut editing. Poxy feature is the same bad one as in Chrome."Hide Images" works like similar extension in Chrome - it still loads images, browser just does not display them.
Content blocker hinted in some redundant "page actions" menu but it does not work nor there is option to specify rules?
-
OH YEAH!
And Ctrl+enter command to fill username and password boxes. That was KILLER!

So why including them ? Especially in bold ?
That's all.
Keyboard shortcuts customization are also present, although not (yet) at the same level of Opera.
BTW I'm afraid you/we can forget the caching mechanism of Opera presto. Firstly because (I believe) the caching mechanism are way buried in the engines, secondly because Opera's caching was a double ended weapon, (I'm sure) it was responsible of many advantages but also many incompatibilities…

Yeah, I know it is a very long shot. But my point was not just list what I want to see in Viv but also what I really valued in Opera (just to outline the general idea of "old good opera").

The truth is that the very first advantage of Opera was its number of features and the level of customization options.
So, unlike most other SW, every user has its own list of "mandatory" features.
For example, for me the email function is the thing I miss more (because its importance, because it was the best email client I ever used on PCs, and because there isn't any viable alternative).
You don't care about it, and you are right too.
That's the real strength: the "biodiversity" of its user base.
But that's also a problem for the developers: all the feature present are the consequence of 20 years of evolution, and re-implement them one by one requires time, and the order of the feature reimplementation, while will please some one, will let down some one else.

That's inevitable, yes.
However, Vivaldi is the first glimmer of hope since the time when "Chropera" let me down. I'm willing to give it a try and place my faith in another attempt of "Opera resurrection" (yes, I'm aware Vv isn't exactly that) yet again.

In my country we are used to say "the good day is seen from the morning", in Vivaldi case the sunrise looks promising to me. (in the Opium case looked ugly).

Personally, I'm happy with my current opera 12.17 as it is.
The only issue I'm facing is slow JS engine and rendering engine overall and outdated Secure browsing. The rest is absolutely what i want from browser.
I understand that Viv never will be another Opera but it indeed shows promise.

Give us some time. I can tell you that what we have now is a lot better than Opera 1.0 beta 1.
A number of us did Opera before. We are not aiming to do Opera. We are aiming to do more. Opera was always about innovation and we aim to innovate. We also aim to provide a lot of functionality and we already have a number of the items you have on your list and more is coming.
Cheers,

Must optimize/improve for old systems. I remember … My old computer was very very slow and I had 6-7 browsersin my Win7. Every browser worked very slowly but Opera start fast, run fast etc. :cheer: :woohoo:
Vivaldi???
-
That is not the easiest task for us given that we are based on Chromium, but we will gradually improve. That is our goal.
Cheers,

I'd like to see, in whatever manner it could be created, the capability of adding function buttons to a bar. I'd like to see some common buttons included, plus the ability of custom buttons being created/added. Function buttons like: a 'referrer' toggle, a JavaScript toggle, I-Frames toggle, "Open with ___ browser", open vivaldi://flags, show source code, pop-up toggle, and so on. Such capability was really important to aiding different users in quickly adjusting Opera configuration/functionality; it would be equally valuable in Vivaldi.

I will make it simple:
(note: by "Presto" I mean old Opera line up to 12.17)- 7. Global ability to enable/disable plugin or load by request, old good images policy: cached, disabled, show all; quick Javascript engine on/off toggle, quick proxy on/off toggle, disable animated images, etc
I don't think Opera should be renamed Vivaldi: all these points seem a revival, but point number 7 would be the one I'd appreciate to see in Vivaldi.
I would also reaaally appreciate an implementation of a "hide multimedia" switch (that is: ON/OFF/FLASH ONLY/STREAM ONLY) that'd allow me to selectively hide multimedia contents (ALL, or selected ones).
Something like "hide images", but for multimedia.Images where "heavy" bandwidth eaters in the '90s… today unwanted streaming multimedia are those I wish I could selectively block.

Okay, I've got one … a feature that to the best of my knowledge, only original Opera / Opera Presto had it and NO ONE else has ever had it.
The famous Extended Progress Bar that one could have down at the bottom of the page. I have Dial Up Internet and that Extended Progress Bar was always VERY helpful … positively awesome ... a lifesaver! YES!
With all other Browsers, be it Firefox, Chrome or even the NEW Opera, which is what I use now ... one only gets a pathetically vague indication that "Data is Loading" or something to that effect. Oh sure, "Data is Loading ..." but at what speed? Is it loading at optimum speed ... 50% speed ... or some snail's pace 33%? With the old Opera Extended Progress Bar I always knew whether data was loading at optimum speed, a decent acceptable speed or whether it was crawling for some reason and I needed to abort and retry the loading of whatever.
So yeah, for me, that old Opera Extended Progress Bar was not only very helpful, but it definitely distinguished itself, set itself apart from the rest of the pack of ho hum "me too" cookie cutter indications of Data Loading of all other Browsers.
Hey, I'm easy to please. That Extended Progress Bar along with the soon to be incorporated Mail Client and Bookmarks ... and the already brought back Prodigal Son NOTES function and I don't see why Vivaldi won't be my Browser of choice.
