Disable new extension icon?
-
Since updating to 2.0 I have this annoying 3-dot extension dropdown icon on the side of my screen.
I never need to see the icons for extensions I've hidden, so it's annoying to have this uselessly taking up space. I also have some scripts set up with other programs that depend on an extension icon being in that particular location which I'd rather not have to change. How can I get rid of this useless thing? Right clicking on it and dragging it around did nothing, and I couldn't seem to find any relevant options in Settings.

@skyling You can't get rid of it, if you want to hide buttons. Well you can, but only by doing a custom modification.
-
Thank you for the answer. I don't understand why they'd add something like this and not make an option to remove it, being able to customize my browser's looks is the exact reason I use Vivaldi
-
This looks like the "Extension Toggle". You can turn it on and off at Settings -> Address Bar -> Extensions Toggle.
-
@timconner The only way to hide the extension toggle is to show the icons for all extensions.
The toggle is currently essential to allow the hiding of buttons.
I think it works well enough. One can show only a few extension icons while having quick access to all of the others from the drop down on the toggle.
Maybe later they will find a better solution.

The thing about it is, I have several extensions hidden because they have no need to show an icon at all, there are no options available when you click said icon or anything. I have no need for the three dot toggle, it's just annoying and in the way. It would be nice to have an option to just completely hide extensions like the old behavior. I'd hate to have to downgrade versions for such a small thing, but it is really unfortunate.

@skyling If you're willing, you can do something about it āā> https://forum.vivaldi.net/category/52/modifications

No, it does not work well enough.There was an option to remove the icons from the toolbar. Now it's changed to hide them to the dropdown area. These are completely different features, yet they replaced the former one with the latter without any notice.
This is unacceptable.

@nekomajin They had to come up with a solution, because the new chromium version back then introduced a new extensions page, which doesn't give the ability to show extension buttons anymore, once they are hidden. It used to be like this: Hide button in the toolbar ā show it again from extensions page. Now you can show it again from toolbar, with the big downside that you still got all your icons there and that you can't use the extension toggle to toggle all extensions. Imo Vivaldi should just come up with their own extensions page. The chromium one is ugly anyhow.

Or you can add it to Extension Control :-).

@luetage
Thanks for the explanation. Was it really undocumented, or I just have missed it? -
@potmeklecbohdan Wanted to implement it but sadly not possible. Google provides no api for hiding extension icons from the toolbar because of security concerns
-
@nekomajin It was the update to chromium 67, which was announced here: https://vivaldi.com/blog/snapshots/chromium-67-update/
It doesn't specifically mention the extensions page, but you can read up on that on the chromium changelog itself. Moreover we discussed the Vivaldi specific change in the comments back then. -

More because of "security" concerns - because it makes me sooo much safer if I have installed a malicious extension from the chrome store when it displays its icon </SCNR>
-
@quhno Yeah, that's exactly their reasoning, lol.

@luetage
It happened in June. It is unfortunate, that they were unable to fix this since then. -
