10 tab management tricks in Vivaldi picked by our community

Just these built in basic tab features alone put Vivaldi in at the top of the browser pile...
[New Tab Position] > 'After Active Tab'
[Closed Tab Activation] > 'Activate Left in Tab Order'
[Tab Cycling] > 'Switch Tabs by Scrolling' ie Mousewheel scrolling...it boggles my mind how Firefox went from being 'THE' best power browser (mainly because of such great addons like tab mix plus and a whole bunch of others that are now all completely broken). To now where Firefox is litterely garbage, that doesn't even support the most basics in better workflow for power users... basics that have been established from almost 20 years ago in a lot of cases.
The built in tab preview thumbnail is also very useful for the tab junkies who have so many tabs open only the favicon is really te only visible thing on the tabbar...again it was another very useful addon in firefox that I believe is also... broken now. Well done Vivaldi, I wish you implemented ALOT more of the things Firefox addons had added, because the alternatives are bleak, unless you count using an older version of Firefox or fork of it.

@neltherion: I agree, an option to have instant ZERO css animation rubbish happening would really speed things up ...with opening or closing lots of tabs..without everything going super sluggish due to animation nonsense.... we just want INSTANT, sure have animations when there is only a few tabs... but when you get 15+ tabs more 30+..and you're open or closing a bunch...eerf its bad
-
@koolio You can turn off animation in the settings.
-
@lonm: well well well then
-
@koolio Whenever I read Vivaldi reviews, the "Performance" issues they point to are always related to this problem... I really hope there's a plan for it even though React Native does seems to be sluggish overall...
-
Very helpful thanks a lot !!
-
I remapped the quick commands to command/ctrl+j to match other apps I use. I love that I can do that with Vivaldi.
-
@koolio I really like the idea of dragging tabs to the left/right/top/bottom of the viewport to get it to automatically tile with the existing tab(s)!
-
Concerning #4, I feel the Window Panel can't fully replace the tab bar unless it can be made a completely separate sidebar, like what happens when setting the tab bar position on the left or right. If I didn't use the other panels this wouldn't be an issue, but since I frequently use the Downloads panel and three web panels, I can't accept having to close them just to change tabs.
-
#1 was my main reason for switching over to Vivaldi and test it and remain using it - years ago!
For me, this is a must-have feature on modern widescreen displays. But there are many other other features besides tab management (especially #4-8) like powerful shortcuts for a lot of commands, web panels (yeah, floating now!), powerful history ... just to name a few.
There is only one thing I'm still sad about: Sync still missing in stable version!

when i read this list of abilities i get happy like a kid, 'cause it's really seldom when one programs has so many cool and useful features build-in. especially for usage simultaneous activity in social networks, youtube, some article sites etc.
i'd only wish smb could give me a hint how to get off from Opera - the only reason i use it is quite fast free vpn. yeap, sometimes governments decide they are over-smart to control what you should or shouldn't know. -
@neltherion: I've just tried this, and it hasn't improved things
For me performance in moving tabs, etc., has been awful - still is.

For those trying to add a tab to an existing tab stack using selections here's how (OSX instructions, sorry) -
first cmd-click on the tab stack to select (make sure you don't have anything selected first)
then cmd-click on each tab you'd like to add to the stack
then right-click (two-finger press on trackpad for OSX as right-click doesn't work there) on a tab (might only be the stack) to bring up the contextual menu; one option will be "New Tab Stack by Selectionβ¦" Click that. It'd be better renamed to "Add loose tabs to stack" in my opinion, as that's the effect.
(I'm finding moving tabs about so slow and erratic as to not be usable; selections make more sense. Also, I'm getting the impression drag tab onto another tab has gone β ?)

FUD [for Linux & Win]. Another user also complained about this recently, but it's just wrong. Various others of us have rebutted the claim, albeit only testing in Linux & Windows [7 & 10]... maybe Mac does have a problem?
-
I'm dying for "Open [link] in New Tile" and/or "Tile Stacked Tabs by Default" options!! Maybe I missed them somewhere?
-
#4 and #7 lacks tree style tab for vertical tab layout, which properly configured would be still grouping feature for those 0,1% user using tab stacking. BTW, is only my feeling that "stack" defines something vertical and perfectly fits to?

With Easygestures, built in gestures aren't a big deal. But I hide the UI, using the mouse sidebutton/scroll or keyboard F2 to navigate tabs.
I prefer NO UI, I use mousegestures or keyboard shortcuts for most stuff... if it isn't built in, then I must write scripts to do the job. Close tabs with an 'L' and re-open them with 'reverse L' - great.
Love the UI toggle - just a mousy squiggle or Ctrl+F11 to pull it back up - superb.
The only 'missing' feature here is being able to save web pages as 'app' shortcuts... but hiding the UI is just about the same thing anyway.

What sort of font smoothing is used while creating screenshots in #4, #5 and %6?
-
They're all great and really useful. The only tab management feature that makes me consider using another browser is Collection feature in Microsoft Edge. Unfortunately none of Vivaldi features work like that. The closest thing in Vivaldi to that is Session which is far behind Collections.
-
You know what would make tab management even easier?
Multiple tab rows!
