Automatically restart after a crash – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 1.16.1195.3
-
@ian-coog Tiled Tabs can be resized, not Speed Dial Thumbnails.
-
@pesala doh, I thought it was about SD, it was too good to be true ;/
-
@masterleo29 Oh well spotted, this is wunderbar.
-
This problem just me?
Win7 64bit, Vivaldi Standalone.
Error message:Unable to launch the installer
Mod Edit: No need for the animation
-
@coleslaw It's unknown here. Do you run any 3rd party security software? Did you try closing and reopening Vivaldi, or shutting down and re-starting your machine? There could be a network problem.
-
Hi @ayespy
Antivirus not installed
The firewall is disabled.
The file is downloaded but the installation stops.
Could be a bad file Installer?...

Download the installer from the Blog and just install over your existing installation.

I take it that "When the UI process crashes" is different from when the browser just closes completely and crashes? Because that just happened and no restart occurred.
Which makes me wonder in what instance the UI could crash and not also crash the whole thing.
-
@pesala That's exactly what I did.
The cause of my problem is interesting.upd:
Found the reason
2 registry keys were damaged
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Vivaldi\Commands
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Vivaldi\AutoUpdate -
@masterleo29: WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111!!!11111!!oneone
-
@luetage okay, I LOLed...
-
@ian-coog and this is why using the word "tab" to refer to a window has always been utterly stupid. Thank you Firefox for forcing that particular bit of idiocy upon us all. Opera should have stuck to their guns (as the first major browser to use MDI) and not dumbed it down to Firefox style...
-
@Ayespy @GwenDragon Any idea?... (about questions regarding UA spoofing)
-
@gwen-dragon that is interesting, the 1st try I got
user-agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/65.0.3325.183 Safari/537.36 Vivaldi/1.97.1195.3
on 2nd try it got spoofed as:
user-agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/65.0.3325.183 Safari/537.36 Viv/1.97.1195.3
Viv instead of Vivaldi, like Opera spoofs with OPR, seems the only way to go. It's because the UA needs to be under 120 chars? -
Thanks for the good work!
There has been a regression in one of the most recent versions: the search engine in the search bar is no longer remembered across sessions. I use a different search engine in the search bar than in the address bar, and now every time I start Vivaldi I get caught out by this: I am sent to the wrong search engine and have to reset it manually. Very frustrating.

"Automatically restart after a crash – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 1.16.1195.3"
Should we take this to mean that it'll not only restart the browser but also re-open any tabs that you had open in it? And it if re-opens tabs will that be "lazy" ie: only loading content when you click the tab?
I'd like to see it re-open tabs after a crash (had a blackout last night with 10 tabs open so it would have been a godsend). However, it might also be worth providing an option in settings to let the user decide whether they want that. Heck it might be worth letting the user decide whether they want to restart Vivaldi after a crash at all.

Love the devs.
But is the scrolling fixed or what? I can't mousewheel my whole life. -
@lonm: I believe that they're only trying to recover from the equivalent of a crashed tab that happens to take out the browser's UI. If the Vivaldi Web UI (or its renderer process) were to crash, the entire browser won't (or shouldn't) go down but you will end up with a blank window, and no UI with which to close the application. Vivaldi will now attempt to recover from this situation more gracefully.

Well, dagnabbit. My Snapshot has been going gangbusters for a long time, but tonight out of the blue it broke without warning. Everything still seemed fine & normal, til i tried to open Settings... the window opened empty blank & grey... each time i tried. All tabs in the main UI itself continued to behave normally, but i smelled a rat, so before i closed & relaunched V-SS i saved the Session. Disappointingly, upon relaunch, the main V UI itself now opens with that same empty blank & grey horror, & each time i closed V, none of its processes die; they all keep running despite there being no UI anymore, so i have to kill them manually each time. Between one set of close/relaunch i deleted my SS profile's Current Tabs & Current Session files, but it didn't help / the symptoms were unchanged, except that now i noticed that the Last Tabs & Last Session files vanished... & stayed vanished with each relaunch.
I'll need to attack this in earnest tomorrow, but i assume that i'm gonna be up for my 7 millionth complete profile rebuild. It's such fun.
