Stand Alone set-up?
-
I have one question, every time I go to set-up a new/different folder the installer always sets it up
in the existing file/directory path.- C:\Users\MyRealName\AppData\Local\Vivaldi (V wants to put a new folder here)
- C:\Users\MyRealName\AppData\Local\Stable
Is this normal? Or should I rename the Vivaldi part to something entirely different?
Or would it hurt having a snapshot and a stable in the same directory?
Or, is option no. 2 be best?
Okay, four questions not one.
I have been running nothing but snapshots for so long I can't remember the last time I use the Stable version.
I don't even have a stable version in my download folder. So...I want to install a Stable as a stand alone and yes
I can indeed be a unsure/para-noid about really screwing something up. If nothing else show me a example. Please.
I'm a dork not a geek. -
@para-noid said in Stand Alone set-up?:

That's the expected behave.

Okay, four questions not one.You can have two different versions installed on the same computer. See this article

@para-noid My Stable is a standalone. My Snapshot is installed per the installer defaults in the appdata/local/Vivaldi folder. My other installs (including Stable, internal test version, etc.) are all installed in folders in the same appdata/local directory, numbered vivaldi2, vivaldi3, whatever.
What I recommend you do is, before you try to do the standalone install, go ahead and create an empty folder in the appdata/local directory named whatever you want, and then use the advanced feature of the installer to select standalone, browse to the folder you have already created, and select it. It will work.

@Ayespy If I go this straight...please have patience...lots of patience.
V Installer>Advanced>Browse>Make New Folder>named whatever (even though the stand alone will go int the same directory as my present snapshot)
Basically two or more versions in the same directory, but using different folders in the same directory.
-
@para-noid No. Forget the installer at the beginning of the process. FIRST, go to the appdata/local directory and create the folder you want.
Then initiate the installer, select Advanced, select standalone, browse to the folder you already created. This is guaranteed safe.

@Ayespy Create a new folder in same directory as my present Vivaldi snapshot?
As in open C:\Users\MyRealName\AppData\Local\Vivaldi then create a new folder here?Or create a whole new directory?
-
Could you give an example of a file path?
-
@para-noid Sample file paths: default for browser selecting single-user, Users/USER/appdata/Local/Vivaldi. Standalone, Users/USER/appdata/Local/Vivaldi1 or Vivaldi2 or Vivaldi3 or Vivaldi4 or stablevivaldi or experimentvivaldi, etc. Any name works. In my case, I keep them all in the appdata/local directory. I have also in the past installed a portable to the c:\ drive in no folder at all, in c:\vivaldi1, and in c:\program files\Vivaldi. This last turned out to be a mistake, because I installed it user-only to that directory, when I should have installed it all-users.

@Ayespy Thanks! Not sure of what I did, but I did it. Closed the new (stable1) window now I don't have any icon.
Will look for it tomorrow. Wonder why it didn't create a desktop icon(?). -
@para-noid It should have. Mine always do. You can obviously, in Windows, go to the program on the HDD, right-click on vivaldi.exe in the Application folder, and "send to > desktop (create shortcut)" which will create the icon for you.
-
How did you know how I did it?
Were you looking over my shoulder?
You must have really long eyesight or a really, really nice telescope.
Again, "Thanks!" Mostly for having the patience.BTW, I did write/typed out the procedure I used (right or wrong) to get my stand-alone up and running.
I did not make a new folder. I "did" type in a new file path during the set-up. Before launching the installer. The part where the green line bounces from side to side.
Next stop...sync. Not anymore tonight.Damn, I'm tired. Goodnight.
