Get rid of the dead birds…
-
No one likes dead bird pages. Get rid of the dead bird and show a happy puppy instead. Or use some version of Toni, he has been underused lately, haven't seen him much in the browser. Anyway, no more dead birds please
-
Also, some text explaining what the issue is would be helpful. Right now unless you're computer savvy and understand what it means for a process to crash, the dead bird will make no sense on its own.
-
Would be better a "sad" tony otherwise people could think that a crash is something that should happen
-
It is a very old issue Black Page with Upside Down Bird.
It is the Chromium code doing this.
-
@pesala Of course it's chromium code doing this. But there is no reason why Vivaldi couldn't change the picture.
-
@luetage If there was no reason, no doubt they would have done it by now.
-
@pesala Are you seriously telling me right now that it's not possible for the Vivaldi devs to change this picture to whatever they want? Don't make me laugh.
Anyway, I found a way to view the page, try this:
vivaldi://kill
edit: DON'T try this address in a session you rely on and are currently working from. Visiting the site could potentially hang/crash the browser and although this hasn't happened to me so far, the site
vivaldi://vivaldi-urls/
shows a clear warning concerning all debug pages. -
Maybe add helpful feature on the page would be more useful than simply telling user "This tab have crashed". You know like offer to reload tab, countdown for auto-reload, or search the URL for related info.
-
BTW I really like Tony and I'd be happy to see more of him inside browser.
Dear V-team... Maybe You should highlight new features with Tony? Or introduce him at the welcome page?...I also think that Tony should be included inside Vivaldi Press Kit
-
@rotfl Not too sure about using Tony on the welcome page. I do like Tony. Tony is much better than an upside down dead bird. So much more can be done with Tony than anything else I have seen. "Long Live Tony!"
-
Don't kill Tony. Just use a disconnected cable or similar and problem solved. No need to kill any web pet.

Maybe Vivaldi should start their own fork so they can do this sort of changes to the code.
-
@terere Vivaldi already is a fork of chromium. The team have already, and continue to, make changes to the engine to make vivaldi better.

Are you sure about this? If I remember correctly they are just collaborating on the upstream project and basically just taking Chromium as it comes and adding changes on top (wrapping its GUI). The reason I mention this is because if they forked into its own direction, it would have a name at this point, just like Blink is a fork from Webkit. Vivaldi is collaborating with patches on the Chromium project but didn't forked it and are just using the mainstream code that comes from Google and other companies. Of course I could be wrong. Eventually as they keep adding changes, this is the only real option they have if they want to keep in control in terms of quality and features over what they add to the browser.
-
@terere You're right. Fork was an incorrect term. It is more like a separate branch.
Perhaps far in the future it might be possible to fork completely but I think for now that would be way too much work.
-
Guys, this is getting way off topic. V is not a fork of Chromium. Vivaldi uses Chromium as a base as does Chrome. Both Chrome and Vivaldi are proprietary software belonging to the proper vendor.
-
Pro Tony people around? I've just posted about a redesign of the mascot! HAHA, It's not that cool for me, I even feel awkward with Tony around...
Stopping the offtopic, I think @dude99 comment is useful.
As @luetage said, it shouldn't be that difficult to change an image. A 20% cooler image must be used (That means no Tony for me... I'm not a Tony fan guys, sorry!) -
-
It's clearly a dead canary so my guess it's just some leftover from the Chromium Canary builds they've just never bothered to remove. After all, users shouldn't need to see it at all, right? Right
But yeah it could be more light-hearted, maybe the Tony with a bandage or something?
-
@Pathduck They killed off Tony, don’t think this will be happening
But anything else would be fine too…
