Will Vivaldi ever resolve session lost on startup problem?
-
Losing session on startup with no way to recover lost tabs/windows is a long standing problem, it can be trace back as long as 3 years ago with over hundreds of complaints, JUST LOOK AT HERE! Over the years, there are some proposal from Vivaldi community to remedy this problem, but so far it seems all have fall on deaf ears.
This morning, such misfortune befall upon me again when I startup Vivaldi. Yes, i lost one month worth of session, with hundreds of tabs & windows, plus my ongoing research material within Vivaldi all vanished! That's not all, the Last Session is overwrite by the Current Session! What happened to my REAL last session? Why overwrite the last session without first backup the REAL last session? There is really no way to recover all that lost if the One-and-Only copy is XXXX!!! Is this a design or a bug? If intended by design, then you have a big loophole that should have been patched long ago. And if this is a bug then why it's still not fixed after 3 years & hundreds of complaints in the forum?
I have previously propose a safe-fall feature :Auto save last session should increase up to 3 session or MORE 6 months ago. During these 6 months i have experienced lost of sessions a least 7 times. I have filed numerous reports on this but problem still persist. I think I have already gone far beyond what normal consumer would have tolerate on repeat terrible experience. I like this browser, but keep losing session randomly on every startup is not fun & I don't want to deal with this trouble again. It feel like Vivaldi dev ain't gonna fix this, or there are nothing they can do about this?
Recently I found myself using Firefox more often than Vivaldi, simply because FF have really improve & fix their browser performance, & it shows. Honestly, i feel Vivaldi's performance & stability is falling behind compare to Firefox. What is going on here? Somehow this remind me of post Opera 12.5 situation. Yes, I was an Opera fan & now a Vivaldi fan, but even die-hard fan can only take so much repeat disappointment before turning away.
Vivaldi developer please answer this, if you are working on a fix to this problem then I'm willing to wait for it, if it's worth the waiting. Forum Mod: If you gonna EDIT this post, then please send this original message in full to Vivaldi browser developer before censor it on this forum, because this is a message for the Vivaldi Developers, & they NEED to read this.
Thanks for support.

...but at least you were able to recover most if not all of your data from the Manual Sessions that you do create regularly [you do, don't you, hmmm?] coz you already knew that...

...right? I mean, it would be incomprehensible that someone could be so experienced as you as to be fully aware of this apparent chronic V failure yet still take no manual recovery precautions, so surely you did... yes? After all, losing your session on every SU is not only not fun, it's not random, & so you can take specific precautionary recovery steps, can't you?
Plus the newer tabs not present in your latest Manual Session were recoverable from either the Closed Tabs bin or the History Web Panel, right?
What's your OS platform? What's your V stream? What's your profile refresh status? Have you installed Session Buddy so that in addition to your own manually-saved sessions you have this as an additional recovery fallback?

It makes no sense to include results from 3 years ago as many bugs will have been fixed since then. Over the last six months, there are eight results for "lost session."
"Dozens" might be more accurate than "hundreds," but as Steffie said, since you're an experienced user who opens hundreds of tabs you should have implemented some backup strategy by now.
I suggest moving groups of 10-20 tabs on a particular topic to a new window, then saving that window of tabs as a session.

Hi all, I'm not here to slinging mud at Vivaldi, I want Vivaldi dev to take this long standing problem seriously & preferably fix it ASAP. Can you guys please don't be so offensively in defending Vivaldi? I'm not interested in fanboy lambasting arguments that won't resolve any problem, doing so might get this thread lockdown.
I apologize if any fanboy offended by my opinion of Firefox have better performance & stability in recent period, but that's just my honest opinion after using it for a while, & you have every right to disagree & prove me wrong (in other new thread). So, let's be friend & be civilize. OK?
@Steffie Blaming user for browser's fault will accomplish nothing, ok. I have tried most work-around found on this forum, unfortunately they are not good permanent solution. And once upon a time, I'm just like you defend Vivaldi glitchy session shortcoming by recommend Session Buddy, until it cause V to lag & crash repeatedly. Then I learn that extensions can't "patch" browser's bug. LOL
@Pesala If the lost/corrupt session on startup problem is indeed resolved then there won't be so many recurrent complaints about it, dated from 3 years ago until today. I never intended to dig out 3 years old thread, just searched "lost corrupted session" & all the result come out on first page. Then many more page after page...
I'm not some diehard data-backup evangelist, I would rather spend time doing productive stuff than backing up sessions every hour. That's the browser's responsibility & V doesn't doing it properly for at least 3 years now, how long do we have to wait for dev to resolved this problem? Another 3 year??
So my point is this: why V user have to constantly worry about session backup when using Vivaldi? We all shouldn't have to do that. I'm not being entitled, it's about Vivaldi's reputation & programming ethics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8gIJOy0c2g#t=100
Thanks for all constructive discussion.

Thanks for all constructive discussion.
Constructive criticism was offered. If you open 100s of tabs, and know that sessions are likely to be lost from time to time, then you should save at least some sessions as backups.
Calling people fanboys or backup evangelists is insulting. Claiming that the developers have deaf ears to your pet issue, otherwise they are not programming in a way that is ethical is also insulting.
All of us have to wait patiently for Vivaldi to reach maturity. Constructive feedback and criticism is always welcome. Rants and insults are not.
So I am closing this flame-bait thread before it gets any worse.

Our last user that contacted us about lost sessions managed to find that an extension was causing it. Though we did not receive any info about which one it was. Though this user was always losing the session, they also had to restart the computer after disabling all extensions.

The last session is overwritten when you close Vivaldi. When you notice your session is vanished you must not close the browser. Instead you copy the last session files somewhere else and then close the browser.
why V user have to constantly worry about session backup when using Vivaldi? We all shouldn't have to do that.
I don't worry about it and I'm a Soprano using the internal version. I have not had problems with my sessions since Vivaldi went out of Beta. At least by conventional use, I have lost a session once because I was testing a bug, but I recovered from the last session file.

On the whole, we don't. I have not lost a session in almost two years now, though I test all of the most bleeding-edge versions of Vivaldi daily. Persons who have complained of this have found various and differing reasons for it, in each case basically tracing down to a local issue (and not the same issue in each case) for the individual user.
I agree that Vivaldi has to become more goof-proof in this regard, but a universal (and universally successful) solution has not been arrived at yet, though the developers are aware that users find this sort of data loss very irritating.
