opening .desktop links from local folder in Panel
-
I've got a local folder in which web urls are shared on my LAN. I have placed this folder in the Panel.
The links in this folder are made in Linux, which gives them the .desktop file extension. When I click on them, nothing happens. If I right-click and choose Open, Vivaldi tries to download them as the text files they are, rather than open the web address they point to.
I haven't tried links made in windows yet, so I don't know how they will work. But the object is to have links formed in both Linux and Windows launchable from the Panel.
Is there any way to do this, or is this a feature request?
Thanks.

Did you try a different browser?

What?

What part didn't you understand?

Maybe we're misunderstanding "panel". I'm referring to the panel in Vivaldi, not the "taskbar" panel on the Linux desktop. Does that clear it up?
-
You mean the Web Panel.
-
Can't you open those *.desktop links using a different browser?
-
If I click on the .desktop links in either windows or linux (windows requires a batch file to do this though), they open in the default browser, Vivaldi. Vivaldi's Web Panel, however, does not interpret them through the OS's file associations, evidently.

Usually, *.desktop files extensions are related to icons. Hence, no browser can open them.

IINW. It's not a matter of MIME Type.

You ca not open a .desktop file in a browser, it is a configuration for Linux desktop shortcuts.
I'm currently opening .desktop web links, when in the desktop or a file manager, in the default browser, in both windows and linux.

You misunderstand!
The Vivaldi Webpanel is not the Linux file manager, it does not detect file content like a shell or filemanager does!Seems a strange reply, considering that our two statements are in agreement.

I've already said I'm opening them in a browser. And I understand I'm not dealing with MIME types, I'm dealing with file extensions.

We are getting nowhere.
Your issue is: the Vivaldi Web Panel does not handle *.desktop files, while the other browser does.
Please, report a bug and post the VB number here.
Thank you. -
