Typed Search Recommendations
-
Good afternoon all,
I have the search bar enabled with DuckDuckGo as my default search engine. I have a question about the recommendations that popup as I type and how to clear them. If I clear my history and clear all of my private data, I find it odd that my previous typed entries in the search bar still show up as "recommendations".For example,
I type in musicbee and I see entries for the main website and some others. Now I type in something specific, e.g. musicbee sort music explorer and I visit some forum sites. If I clear all of history and my private data, close and relaunch the V, as I type musicbee in the search bar, what I listed above is immediately shown above the search results.I can't find any where in the User Data folder or in the Settings where this "history" is saved/option to clear. As a test, I started V with a new/blank profile, enabled the search bar and typed in musicbee - none of my previous recommendations are listed.
Any suggestions ?

In case you bookmarked musicbee, clearing private data wont prevent the word to appear on the Drop-Down.

See if that helps:
Tools >> Settings >> Address Bar: on the option Address Field Drop-Down Menu uncheck "Include Bookmarks"

Thank you for the suggestions. In this case, I haven't bookmarked musicbee or anything related. The typed recommendation history is only "persistent" in the search bar and not the address bar. It is easy to reproduce with any type of search. For example, if I type in moneydance desktop in the search bar, I get the expected results. If I go back and type in moneydance apple banana pear, no matter what I clear, that goofy entry is always being displayed in the search bar whenever I type moneydance. I don't get these results in the address bar, only the search bar and nothing moneydance is bookmarked or visited.
I'm just not sure where those recommendations are being saved or stored and how to clear them. If I close V, move my Default User folder out and force a fresh profile, those entries are gone. If I put my copy of Default User back, they return. I have searched the folders and files and even used SQLiteDatabaseBrowserPortable.exe to look into some of the databases - no luck.
Also, I am on Windows 10 x64 w/1.13 x64 (purposely avoiding 1.14 until all the latest issues have been resolved). I have 1.15 Snapshot installed at work, I can try this on that tomorrow.

@vongalin Try deleting it.

@pesala Thank you for the suggestion. You know, I thought I had been doing that; however, I just realized that I was clicking the X icon in the search bar itself when the entry was visible in the bar. I didn't think to expand the list and click from there. I also see some previous search entries in the expanded list from a while back - your suggestion will probably do the trick !
Since I have been clearing everything, every way that I can think of and these still show, any idea where these entries are saved on disk in the profile ?

The Vivaldi Help Pages (F1) are adding new contents periodically. You may like to have a look at this article.
There's a brief description of some files at the bottom of the page. -
@lamarca Thank you for the suggestion. I checked the site and then checked my folders, I found the LOG file in *****\User Data\Default\Local App Settings\mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli*****. I can view it in Notepad++, but it says it is password protected when using SQLiteDatabaseBrowserPortable.
The bothersome part is I can see tons of previous searches under the TYPED_SEARCH_HISTORY entries with no way that I have found to clear them. Shouldn't there be a way in the browser to clear these ?
Since I don't change my settings too often, I did a test but would prefer not to resort to this. I deleted the LOG file, fired up V and re-set all of my settings (since they were lost when deleting the file). I put everything back the way I like and then closed V. Once closed, I locked down the LOG file so it couldn't be edited. V launched normally, I did some goofy search entries, closed V and looked at the file. As expected, no changes since it was locked down. Seems a bit extreme and unnecessary, but I figured I'd try it and see if a "lockdown" approach would work and still allow V to operate normally (again, since I don't change settings).
Hopefully I am missing something obvious that would allow a user to clean these entries up. Many thanks for everyone's suggestions and tips !

hi lamarca and pesala
hello vongalin and hello everyone
Have You had the machine visit the duck duck go dot com /settings page? Not unlike many start seite there is a settings menu for settings. I hesitate to call them personal settings; machine / browser associated settings at duck duck go. See if those settings cause a difference; "General, Theme, Appearance, Privacy"-

Hey,
At the first look, the settings have the same options of any site. I didn't understand the machine part.

hello vongalin
greetings lamarca, yes. Site settings. the duckduckgo Site. easy to overlook when accessing through the search bar and never encounter the settings menu at the site. instance at duckduckgo the "Auto-Suggest" setting.

Cheers ri. i.
The site settings are on the three vertical lines at the top right corner at the page.

hello vongalin
it is not a site setting. I went the wrong way with that. proved to self it was possible but not true.
the searchbox history is deleted by line selection as pesala illustrated; and is deleted with vivaldi's Tools = "Clear Private Data - Browsing History"
It is connected to browsing history in the cache, then. Also found in "settings, privacy, Third Party Services, Search suggestions in search field" the box is not checked here, though the search history is there .. is that by first party? oh well. another variable there under privacy settings.
(had to add the search box to vivaldi here to have a look at this history thing. vivaldi here is normal minus the search bar. ; don't find it useful on the toolbar.)

Perhaps it's a work in progress. If you want to avoid the history, do a search on the Address Field. *Clear Private Data" >> Browsing History will do the job.

Cache saves partially elements of the pages you visit.
