Fullscreen Mode with Panels
-
Fullscreen means make the browser fill the screen, not hide controls as well. If we also wanted to hide the controls, we use the "toggle UI" function.
The address bar and panels should be visible in full screen mode if the user so chooses (maybe only if the user hovers the cursor at the top of the page)
-
@lonm Shortcuts currently work in fullscreen mode, but the change is not shown until exiting fullscreen mode (obviously a bug). The shortcuts should show any toolbars or panels, e.g. bookmarks bar, status bar, address bar.
-
So there should be differentiation for "presenter mode" and "fullscreen mode"
-
There is already Toggle UI, which can show toolbars and panels.
-
@pesala "Chromeless" sounds like "I have no idea what I should expect from this option"
-
I think the whole problem could be solved with an interactive interface in the Settings, where people can mark which of the GUI elements should be visible in full screen view. It should be a sketchy representation of the browser. Clicking on an item, like sidebar or tab bar should highlight the given element.

This is now available in the latest Snapshot. Go fullscreen (F11) then focus the address bar (F8) or Ctrl+L.

The Address Bar can be shown in fullscreen mode by focusing it with F8 or Ctrl L (or whatever shortcut you prefer).
The Panels do also show and hide with F4, but that is a bug, listed as a known issue in the Snapshots Team Blog.

Personally, I would like to see the option to show any toolbar in fullscreen mode, but this Feature Request specifically asked about the Address Bar and Panels. I have modified the title to request showing the Panels as that bug will presumably be fixed.
-
@pesala while it would be nice to have any toolbar, now that panels can be viewed, there is less of a pressing need to have the tab bar In particular in fullscreen as the window panel can manage the tabs instead.
-
@lonm Now that the URL field can be shown in fullscreen mode there is no need to request it. The panels bug will likely be fixed, preventing them from showing up at all.
Hopefully, having seen this thread, the devs will fix the Panel bug so that it is hidden by default but can be shown with F4 or a mouse gesture.
The whole point of using fullscreen mode is missed if one has to waste 15% of screen real-estate to show the panels just to see, edit, or type a URL.
-
@pesala I wouldn't agree with that entirely. To me there are two main reasons you would want to go full screen:
- Hide the rest of the Vivaldi UI to focus on the webpage
- Hide the OS level UI to focus on the browser.
In the first case, you are correct, but I think it is important to be able to use panels and other toolbars (not by default though) in full screen in the latter case.
-
It's interesting. Vivaldi used to have a bug in the early days, which kept the panel visible when watching videos in fullscreen. I loved it! You could hide the panel of course manually, but being able to chat while having some random stream running made so much sense. I remember I begged them to keep it but no chance

All I know ... is that this breaks the "full screen" option in youtube videos such that the panel is there, wide/windowed mode or just the sliver (8 to 10 pixels wide it looks like) about half as wide as the scroll bar but there.. F4 widens it to show the "windowed mode" and not having it in windowed mode is even worse.

Implemented in the latest snapshot.

Something discovered on /r/vivaldi:
You can get fullscreen mode with all the UI elements enabled in full:
- Press F11 (fullscreen)
- Press Ctrl+F11 (Hide UI)
This seems like buggy behaviour, but honestly, this seems to be a solution to what many people above were asking for.
