Displaying pasted text with ‘paste and go’
-
Whenever I try to paste something in the address bar and go using the ‘paste and go’ functionality, the text is not displayed in the address bar, even though Vivaldi then takes me towards the link I pasted. This is especially problematic when I’m trying to ‘paste and go’ in search engines with shortcuts, as sometimes I copy things incorrectly and want to check what I’m going to browse right before the page where I’m searching is loaded.
Is there any way to change this behavior?
-
@david-cortes I can't reproduce this. I get the pasted text here. Do you use any extensions? Have you changed anything from default in address bar settings?
-
Nope, no extensions, and just default settings for the address bar. Same behavior happening in two different computers and OSes.

This is unclear, are you asking for the pasted text to be displayed BEFORE the "go" function (i.e. "paste" pause "go") ?
Or are you expecting the search engine shortcut to be displayed? For me, it "immediately" launches the search in the requested Search Engine (from shortcut) so if I paste "g example" the address bar shows e.g. www.google.com/search?q=example(... etc).
Or do you simply mean that the address field is empty?

Sorry for the confusion. I mean, I would expect it to show the pasted text in the address bar while the page is loading, e.g. so that if I copy-paste-go ‘g example’, it would show ‘g example’ in the address bar until the page is loaded (like opera 12), instead of showing it blank and then displaying the address once loaded.
-
I would expect the opposite - as the browser needs to know the "expanded" address to load it, I would expect the "long" address (www.google.com/search...) to appear immediately, and the the "running progress meter" while the site is being loaded.
If I remember my own UI programming experiences from some years ago, this might be a screen update issue - the browser is too occupied with loading the page to draw the updated UI on the screen. Don't think this should happen, though, that's what threads are used for.
But maybe this is a perspective from which the devs might look into it. Perhaps you should paste a bug report; ideally with a video of the "paste-go-and-later-update" behaviour.

I, like @Morg42 , would expect to see the real address while it is loading- as a security check if nothing else.

Yes, well, for a security check it'd be a bit late as the page was already loading (and possibly js starting to do its evil... )
For security reasons, I wouldn't use "paste and go" at all; just paste, check back, and "go" by enter. Over the years I found that the keyboard can be faster to control the computer than the mouse ... sometimes.

I was thinking more about "hijackers" than malicious pages. But either way, seeing the actual address is better than just the pasted text imho.
