Is there a usable Youtube downloader?
-
I am using the snapshot on Ubuntu 16.04. the question is as the title reads.
I installed Tubemate for chrome 2.1, that doesn't do much other than popping up in a tab with the noticeThank You for using This Software ...
Made to Make Your Life Better!cpmyvideo take almost a minute to react, and then you have to remove ads before it is usable.
Almost like Windoze software with all the ads. -
https://github.com/rg3/youtube-dl/ works very well, via a command window. Multiple sites.

Use vlc to get the actual video location on the googlevideo servers.
- Copy the youtube video address from your web browser
- Open vlc > Media > Open Network Stream and paste in the youtube link and click play.
- Goto vlc > tools > codec information.
- Right click in the "Location" box and choose "select all" then copy.
- Paste and go in your web browser where you can then right click on the playing video and "Save Video As".

I wonder if anyone ever reads the YouTube Terms of Service?
5.1.C. you agree not to access Content through any technology or means other than the video playback pages of the Website itself, the YouTube Player, or such other means as YouTube may explicitly designate for this purpose;

That tip indeed deserves an upvote

@pesala If they don't want me to download the occasional video, all they have to do is block me and the other 100 or so million that visit their site.

Youtube-dl works ok. It is not as convenient as the extension in Firefox that I used to download tutorials for my video editing software.
-
Yes, the command line is not as convenient as an interface. I have helped it by creating a command alias, so all I need to type is "ytdn" for the command I usually use. And the program works extremely fast.
JDownloader is a very nice piece of work. But I found two problems. First, it requires Java, and second, it is very slow. It took at least 4 minutes to download a video that ytdn did in about 12 seconds.

I use a desktop utility
GPL Open Source, works fine but only for YT
Downloading videos is not a crime, by the way, while it is for private non-profit use.
However, it is illegal to upload music videos or movies that are not your own to YT and charge for clicks, as this is for profit -
@catweazle The VLC tip is great!

Please don't hate me for this suggestion, I'm a Vivaldi fan through and through, but there are times when I go to the dark side and use other browsers for specific reasons, and one of the best ways (IMO) to download a YouTube or other video, or just the sound is to use the SlimJet Browser. It has the YouTube downloader built right into it, and you can easily choose the parameters and just download and convert.
The nice thing about doing it this way, is you can preview and download the video all in one place with no copy and paste of the URL. Also, SlimJet is Blink based, so you can use most any Chrome extension - including uBlock origin, so you can do away with YouTube ads.
Once you go to a Youtube video, just look on the bottom left of the video, and click "Download Video" and a box will pop up with choices.
PS - I did make the suggestion in the suggestion thread for Vivaldi to add a downloader like SlimJet, and I even included a link and description. Still not too late to add it!
