The brutal function of 'Escape' in the search bar
-
Pressing 'Escape' can have irreparable outcomes in the search bar: it can wipe out typed content irretrievably, not even Ctrl+z recover it. Pressing it also cancels any active selection made in the previous searches list which one invariably has to do to return to the search engines list, as it remains disabled & inaccessible, when other search bar menus are active. I've written a request for the function of 'Escape' to be made optional and also for an independent keyboard shortcut to select the search engine for the active selection in the suggestions list. If you find this shortcut useful, up-vote the request, or if you have suggestions or thoughts share them here.

@med1an1ck Please edit your feature request to limit it to one feature request per post.
There is already a command to focus the search field. The default shortcuts are Ctrl+K and Ctrl+E, so you could simply leave the request to disable Escape in the search field.
For me, pressing Escape merely closes the list of search engines, pressing it again clears the search term if you wish to enter something else.
Down cursor opens the list of search engines.
It is hard to see how it would be improved by disabling Escape.

I've requested a keyboard shortcut to call up the search engines list independent suggestions list.

I've requested the 'Escape' button being made optional, as oftentimes it destroys the entirety of typed text - with no possibility to restore it whatsover!*

I'm utterly confuse with the Escape key part
I agree, its inconvenience I've had an excruciating experience with stemmed from my repeat attempts to switch from the search suggestions list to the search engines list, where too often the entire search field had been emptied and I had to retype everything a new. As you have said, it is far away, and to utilize its "clear the field for another search term" function, one can be much easier served with 'Ctrl+A' keys, its undesirability stems from the fact that once pressed, the entire search bar content is gone for good - impossible to restore. So its utter undesirable service comes for me mainly from that hazard, as many times I have been left helpless to restore the search text which I just typed.
I'd see it very handy to have a shortcut that will override the search suggestions (or prev. s-s) & launch search engines drop-down list, because often I want to search for a term on the suggestions list in another search engine - as I switch between a Thesaurus, a Dictionary and a Translator for example - and I reckon it's easier accomplished in the search bar, as would be more complicated in the address field...

The Address Field act that way, IF "Show drop down when typing" was ticked. It's clear the entry too if it's not.
I find something new again today.but the selection comes in form of URLs and thus inconvenient to use for a search in another search engine

What I made a request for is the keyboard short to call up the search engines list when search bar is already focused.
For that, just use the down cursor.
Escape will close that list without deleting the search term. Pressing escape again will clear it to allow one to type a new search term.

Didn't you read my post, where I said I need a keyboard shortcut independent of the functioning of previous searches/search suggestions list? I need a keyboard shortcut that would not alter the content of the search bar as various items from the previous searches/search suggestions list appear in it, that would call up drop down the search engines list when a search suggestions (or previous searches) list is active without cancelling the item from a search suggestions list and reverting it what has been actually typed - 'Escape' does cancel the content of the search suggestions/previous searches list.
My other request was for the functionality of the 'Escape' button to be made optional - both the function to close a search bar menu, and, and especially so, to wipe out all the content of the search bar irreversibly ...

@med1an1ck To make sure you understand how to use the existing feature:
- Focus the Search Field (Ctrl K)
- Select the search engine
- Type the search string
To choose a different search engine
- Press the down cursor
- Continue pressing to select the desired search engine
- Press Enter.
It can all be done without touching the mouse. It's even easier in the URL field by typing the keyword.
-
@pesala I don't think you understand my request, but I'll leave it at that.

I don't think you understand my reply. It is possible to retain the search string on selecting a different search engine.
You can open the search engine list with the down cursor key, and select other search engines with the cursor keys or the mouse. If you use the mouse to focus the search field, the existing search string will not be lost.
-
@pesala User appears to be seeking a solution which does not include the mouse. Here, at least, it is necessary to focus the search field with the mouse prior to pressing the down arrow.
-
@ayespy If you want to close the list without using the mouse, and without losing the search string, the Left Cursor can be used.
The request for a shortcut to open the search engine list already exists: down cursor.
The request for Escape not to clear the search string is valid, but for now workaround are available for this issue. It is not impossible to do.

Pressing the 'Left arrow' does not close the suggestions list, the 'Down' key at this moment is disabled, so you're just left with pressing 'Escape' to close the current menu and activate 'Down' button's function - the search bar's active selection gets lost at that instance. While clicking the mouse in search bar does not keep the active selection from suggestions list it - it discards it! This, at least, is what it does for me, everybody is free to try it for himself.
The request for a shortcut to open the search engine list already exists: down cursor.
The request itself does not exist, as none has been made apart from mine - what I have requested is a shortcut to call up the search engines list independently from the function of 'previous searches' or 'search suggestions' lists, whereby the active selection is not dropped. It has been explained to you in a number of posts already, but you're still in the cognitive ascent right where you were at your post #1 ...
The request for Escape not to clear the search string is valid, but for now workaround are available for this issue. It is not impossible to do.
'Escape' drops active selection when you are compulsed to press it to activate the 'Down' key's search engines list function, and it removes the content of the search bar irrevocably when pressed one final time with all lists closed - a workaround for neither exists, and this is why I requested an independent shortcut for the search engines list for the former issue, and the optionality of the 'Escape' function for the latter. I really the first request will be implemented, as I believe it will simply eliminate an atrocity of the usability of the search bar ...

The shortcut already exists. Clicking in the search field with the mouse does not clear the search string. Neither does Left Cursor.

No. I already understood from your second post that you want a shortcut to open the search list when the field already has focus, not one to focus the search field.
The down cursor opens the search list without clearing the search string. You can select a different search engine and search with it by pressing enter.
GestureLeft will then go back to where you were, but you will need to use the focus search field shortcut to edit your search string.
After pressing the 'Left arrow', the 'Down' button does not work to launch the search engines list,
Yes it does.
-
This is how I understand the problem:
- Type 'ham' into the search field.
- Use the down arrow key to navigate to the suggestion 'hamilton'.
- Press escape to close the suggestions list, so that you then can use the down arrow key to open the search engine list.
- Upon closing the suggestions list, 'hamilton' is reverted to 'ham'.
The OP wants a way to open the search engine list without closing the suggestions list, since closing the suggestions list reverts the search string to the point it was at before a suggestion was highlighted (as indicated in my example above).
After pressing the 'Left arrow', the 'Down' button does not work to launch the search engines list,
Yes it does.
If I type something into the search field (e.g. 'ham') it opens the list of search suggestions. If I press the left arrow key the text cursor is moved, but the suggestions list is not closed. Pressing the down arrow key highlights the first suggestion.
ETA: I also noticed that if you press Escape while the search engine list is open, the list is closed and the search field is cleared (instead of it just closing the list, as it does if you have the suggestions list open).
