Fetching emails by POP3
-
Hi,
I am using Evolution as email client. And I have implemented my email account here by POP3 and SMTP. Everything works fine except I am now receiving every email twice. How can I change this?
Kind regards,
Sigurd -
I also encountered this problem with my bug reports being sent twice to my POP3 account.

Is this really a duplicated mail? Can you have a look in mail headers?
I no longer keep bug reports. I submitted a new one about this mail bug. Let's see what happens.

@sigurdschmidt Why you use POP3? IMAP is better.

@gamliel IMAP does not have permanent storage if something goes wrong on the server. That's one reason...

Hi Ayespy,
I am using Evolution 3.18.5.2 too with OS Maui 17.06. And I agree with gamliel. I keep emails for 7 days on the server. Once I had problems and lost all recent mails. This way I have the latest mails of 7 days still on the server.
I mean two same emails is better than no email at all. It is not such a problem. But it is a little bit curious, isn't it.
Kind regards,
Sigurd -
@Ayespy HDD crashes and other failures are possible on both the server and your computer. Anyway, it is a good idea to have backups.
IMAP has two main advantages:
- IMAP can, if you want, download not the entire messages, but just their headers, and the messages marked by you for download. You can need this feature, if you pay for each megabyte of internet traffic.
- IMAP leaves messages as they are on the server. So, you can access you email box from different places.
Yes, leaving of messages on the server is a disadvantage at the same time: someone with access to the server can read your email archive. But you can use PGP/GPG. (It is impossible to persuade all keypals to use PGP/GPG. But at least Facebook can encrypt all emails it sends to you, although not by default.)

@gamliel I'm not concerned about the reading of my email by others. I'm only concerned about the permanent loss of it, as my emails are, technically, legal records and a historical filing system. So when GMail lost user data not once, but twice, and the result was that my local inbox emptied out, I resolved to always keep a POP3, permanently downloaded copy of mails, although I use IMAP as a practical way to keep mail synced on all my various devices.

I intensely dislike Evolution, & use Thunderbird. For years [or at least, however long i've had a V email address; maybe that's only 10' (my memory's not as good as it never was re times, teehee)] i have sent & received all my Vivaldi email account mail using POP3 in TB. I have never had any problem with duplicated emails.

Hi,
I don't understand the discussion here anymore. This (double emails) is not an issue of Evolution. It is an issue of Vivaldi Mail! I am using several different email accounts. Nowhere I have the problem of double emails. But I remember times when I still used Thunderbird as email client, there was an email provider with the same problem. The email provider quickly could solve the problem on his server.
I would like to ask the Vivaldi Mail team again to care about this problem!
Kind regards,
Sigurd -
@sigurdschmidt "This (double emails) is not an issue of Evolution. It is an issue of Vivaldi Mail! " ... well, not for me. Exactly as i advised you, it has never occurred for me, with my Vivaldi account, when sending & fetching from my email client [TB] using POP3. Ipso facto, your generalised blanket statement is incorrect. If you wish to disbelieve me, that's fine, but then maybe believe Gwen-Dragon, as she also told you "I cant reproduce this with POP3 on my Thunderbird.".
-
@sigurdschmidt That's not a common issue, but it happens sometimes, not only to Evolution.
I can't explain you exactly why happens, but sometimes the email client doesn't save correctly the messages history and request this twice or even more to the server.
Try to create a new configuration from scratch. Probably this fix your problem.

I can verify this. I kept all bugreports I ever sent to Vivaldi, and I have them all twice. Both messages have the same header and are combined into one thread.
