Yes Shpankov, Google workers cannot become aircraft pilots (colour blindness).
More important: Russia won in Lillehammer 1994. Who will win in Winter-Olympics i Sotchi 2014? Norway or Russia? -
In Russia there is old sport proverb: "The main thing - not a win, but participation".
In fact, doesn't matter, which country will be winner in medals. More important - how many people around the world will forget about war and will participate (physically or virtually) in sports games.

In Russia there is old sport proverb: "The main thing - not a win, but participation".
Is it because the games cost about 51 billion $?
-
No, this proverb is very old - I heard it at least 40 years ago
About "high cost" I can open a "small secret": in fact, for this money was created the new modern resort with the world level quality of service, including the Olympic objects. Do you know some European resorts that can offer beach and mountain-skiing rest simultaneously? Now we have one in Russia, just 2-4 hours flight from any part of Europe. This resort will generate about $2 billion revenue per year, thus for me it seems a very smart decision

I don't follow Olympic games are all about politics anyway. If they ever had any meaning it is long lost by now.

With regard to the Functionaries you are definitely right! In addition to profit there is no deeper significance. And the main part is corrupt.
But for many athletes it surely has a extraordinary meaning even in sporting sense. Even though, many of the athletes are also profit-driven nowadays. -

And why not?
Training for Olympia is a full time job, often not cheap, they are the best of the best and they still have to pay the rent.Even the athletes in the ancient Greece Olympic games had sponsors and got paid.
-
And why not?
No - don´t get me wrong. It´s ok to earn money with it.
But I think formerly athletes had more "ideals". To make money, even a lot, was not unimportant but more a pleasant side effect. It was not the driving force, like today.
I think much of the "spirit of sport" has been lost over time. -
Yes, modern Olympic games - it is business, politics, dopes war, intrigues, etc. But, anyway, it's a sport contest. I'm sure: you will watch some streams with sportsmen from your country and you will be very glad to see the flag of your country on the top of the winners list

OMFG ahahahahaha i had the same first thought :woohoo:
-
Maybe a coincidence? But it is the ring for "America"…
-
It's common believe (probably not correct) that those circles represent continents , and the red (last one) is for Americas.
blue - Europe
yellow - Asia
black - Africa
green - Oceania
red - N&S America
(yea, it's kinda racist)but what's that got to do with gay ppl?

In Russia there is old sport proverb: "The main thing - not a win, but participation".
This is not a Russian proverb. It's among the original olympic ideals as expressed by Pierre de Coubertin: "The important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win, but to take part." In French it's "l'important dans ces olympiades, c'est moins d'y gagner que d'y prendre part".
But French Wikipedia says the saying did not originate with Coubertin. He was quoting someone else approvingly.

I am truly amazed by all the things that the Olympics are seen as. I thought that they are no more then entertainment, TV time, sell those adds to make money. Russia tried very hard to show that the old Russia was dead and the new Russia is just like the rest of Europe. No worrys there mate!

It may amaze you but much of the world is still relatively ad-free. Some of the biggest nations of the world (including those bigger than United States) watch/listen to the olympics without advertisements.

Your Russophobia becomes tiresome.

Russia phobia? I don't think so. I am simply reflecting what living in the US and being in the US has ingrained in my aging mind. The only reason I bother with this stuff is to try and gain some knowledge about how the rest of the world thinks. As I mentioned before, Krake, your smart ass quips don't contribute to that.
Another comment from Medium was that all the rest of the world is not overwhelmed by commercials on TV like the US. That is absolutely stunning news. Is this because channels are limited and government controlled?
