Lost passwords and most login states
-
For no discernible reason, on opening V. this morning all passwords had been lost, and I had to log in afresh to many, but not all, sites. I have the PWs backed up, no problem, but thought I report what happened.

@paul1149 What distro & DE? Do you use either Gnome Keyring, or KDE Wallet? If so, do you use it to store your V pswds? If so, have you checked to ensure that Keyring/Wallet had not unexpectedly closed? Were that to occur, V would "appear" to have lost its passwords, but closing V, reopening Keyring/Wallet, then relaunching V usually* then automagically lets V once again know that it does have passwords stored, & accessible. That scenario has occasionally happened to me.
*There have been random & rare occasions [albeit none in any recent SS's] when this hasn't worked, & i've had to start again wrt recreating all the relevant userIDs & passwords. Not a drama as my "real" password storage is KeePassX... but yes a nuisance.
*There have been other, also random & rare occasions, when V loses ONE-only password, but all the others are still there & ok. I generally blame sunspots &/or poltergeists at these times.
*Finally, there have been other, again random & rare occasions, when V behaves like it has lost ONE-only password, even though i can see the damn thing plainly still listed amongst all the others [but the relevant website just doesn't want to know]. In these instances i have had to manually delete the [apparently perfectly good looking] entry in the V passwords list, then recreate it. At these times i find the other essential aspect to my technical recovery is to go fetch a cushion off the lounge & throw it at the pc.
All of those asterisked exceptions have occurred to me, more than once, BUT i have been using V since Feb 2015 & as it has progressively matured, those exceptions became rarer & rarer. I don't recall any of them manifesting for several months [or alternatively, they may have occurred again 30' ago; my memory is poor ;-)].

Thanks, @Steffie . That is a great overview to the problem.
I'm on Linux Lite, which is a ubuntu derivative. It's x64 and the latest version, 3.4. It used the XFCE DE, and the gnome keyring, which I haven't had a problem with that I know of.
If I come across another dropped PW, I'l try to restart V and see if that's a factor. What strikes me as odd, though, is that several sites had lost my login status. That's why I suspected a local data loss here. I didn't run anything like BleachBit last night.

@paul1149 Hi Paul. Good luck with it.
This is totally Off Topic, so i shall incur the Wrath of Zarquon for tangentialising like this... I have LL in one of my VMs, but i have not looked at it for several months [maybe there's been another major version update since i last tried?]. LL has always struck me as a very interesting & commendable distro, & Xfce is my 2nd-fav DE. However, i'm a KDE/Plasma DE girl at heart, & each time i have seriously contemplated migrating to a distro with Xfce [& once i did so, on my Lappy (my Tower is my primary pc) for a couple of months] I just couldn't get away from the fact that so many nice/handy things in KDE4/Plasma5 are either much harder for me in Xfce, or absent. I do however think it's quite wonderful that LL exists... options & choice are a beautiful thing.

@Steffie Cool. I've been on Linux and LL for about 2 years now, and have been very happy. LL and XFCE aren't perfect in every way, but they are very solid and have a lot of features, and I have no qualms recommending them to Windows friends looking to convert - which has happened several times. I've been thinking of playing with KDE to see how the other half lives. One reason I stick with LL is that I refurb laptops, and this is a great distro for older units, particularly netbooks.

@paul1149 Ha, now we shall both be damned. On the other hand, this is actually your thread, so if you don't whinge about now being OT, & i don't, then maybe we might still get outta here with our lives.
I practiced it first in a VM on my Tower, before last year opting to migrate Lappy from Mint 17.3 KDE4 [which had been my much-loved life-raft after abandoning Win in 2013/14] to Mint 18 Xfce with Compiz. It took a steep learning curve, & i broke it at least once, but eventually got the hang of Compiz sufficiently to have all manner of yummy eye-candy desktop effects with it, which were pretty good analogues of my highly-cherished KDE4 KWin Desktop Effects. It really was quite cool, albeit always with a feeling of "fragility" about it that i don't have back in "the real deal". Can Compiz be installed & configured in LL?
You could always have a look at a Plasma5-based distro initially in a VM in your LL, of course. One thing to bear in mind however... I was able to get ALL of the Compiz eye-candy working fine in my VM [& thus later Lappy], but conversely NOT all of the Plasma5 Desktop Effects work in a VM, due to compositing issues[?]. Most of it you can setup & use fine in a VM, but not everything [eg, the KWin Desktop Cube "works" in a VM (but is super-laggy unless you threw lots of RAM at your VM, which kinda sorta means you have to have fairly decent physical RAM to begin with), whilst other effects like Wobbly Windows are a no-go in a VM (in KDE4 they were offered but didn't work in a VM, whilst in Plasma5 they're not even offered if the install is in a VM)].

..............................................................................................PS -- LL strikes me as an excellent distro for older slower machines, as you say, if the ex-Win user still wants lots of features & functions even though the OS is quite slim.

@Steffie I think we'll be ok. What the Lord has blessed cannot be damned.
It seems to me that LL is tightly wound. I tried installing the LXDE DE in it a while back, expecting the ability to choose it on boot, as ubuntu provides, but that choice was not there. I also lost my window snapping ability, in the attempt, it seems. I'm not sure about Compiz. The forums are pretty helpful and a good place to ask.
I was just looking into Neon a bit at the same time I opened this thread. It's worth a gander, hopefully I can soon.

I didn't know one can run without the key ring. Maybe it's gone flaky? Yesterday, among my lost log in states was the LastPass extension, and that happened twice - once early in the morning, and again late in the evening. The Chrome Store doesn't show any recent updates to the extension. I have had no PW problems in Slimjet on the same machine, and aside from LastPass no recurring PW problems in V last night or today.

Ok. Good to know. I do enjoy not entering passwords all the time, and I seldom have problems, and I don't know what the problem here is, so I'll keep it for now.
