Is Opera Discover great?
-
One of the few new features in Opera during the last 4 years is Opera Discover. It is such a major feature for Opera at this time that it is used to brand the browser, as is seen on the front page. But do people use it? Personally I find it a waste of time, but I do know one person that likes it. I do not mind having a news aggregator, but I would prefer to be able to control it myself in minute details, including the sources to include. In any case I do not consider a news aggregator to be a major selling point for a browser. What do you think? Cheers, Jon.

Could be better … I've used it a couple of times. But even after configuring it for things I'm moderately interested in, I had to scroll down a long time to find anything that was interesting. I finally disabled the prefetching of content since I never even look at it any more.
-
After a few curiosity uses, I couldn't maintain any interest in it. Predefined sources aren't going to match my interests very often.
-
I've used it a handful of times out of curiosity and then promptly forgot about it. It doesn't interest me. I want the browser as simple as possible… in fact, I want it to get out of the way. It's a means to get me to where I want to go and not the destination in and of itself. That's why I'm not a huge fan of skins or themes or what-have-you. The browser should be quick at rendering pages. It should be compatible with the most popular sites on the web. It needs to follow the W3C standards. If I want to read the news, I'll use the browser to take me to my favorite news sites rather than present to me its pre-determined news items.

I don't use this feature. I prefer RSS feeds.

I block it through host file

Cheers,
Jon.That's similar to what I said when the new Opera came out.
It's an okay feature. I mostly tried it out a few times out of curiosity. When they gave the option to stop pre-loading content, I checked it, and I've barely used it since (not that I really use the new Opera as it is).
I could see myself using a feature like Discover if I needed to kill a couple minutes and absolutely had nothing better to do. Like, if I was waiting for water to boil or something.
But it's a far cry from a 'killer feature'. Definitely not something to re-brand the browser around.
For all the talk of cutting features that Presto had because nobody used them, it seems kind of odd that they decide to push something trivial like Discover.

I would not say it is completely waste. For somebody it may be quite useful as an "overview" of the daily press. I myself use it almost never, since I subscribed all (to my mind) important things via RSS or Newsletter. So I do not need it.
But it does not bother me as much as some user who want to remove it desperately from the speed dial. (Though I have disabled "pre-load content").To cut a long story short, Nothing that anybody absolutely need.

I don't use Opium 15+, I don't even come close to this abomination.
Discover is simply spyware (probably worse that the one included in Google Chrome). It will be used to gather data on users and thus allow to make money on them.
If I remember correctly Opera bought an advertising company (or set up a new one?). It's the new direction.
Some Opera users dicovered that this Discover behaves like spyware. After deleting data by user, usage data is still gathered without Discover even being used (from comments on the Opera team blog). Not all employees were aware of it.I don't use it and I don't wanna waste time on it.
Opera 15+ has no chance of survival. It will bring down the whole company. As I noticed, the mobile phone market may be closing for Opera, so there will be nothing left. Doom is the future.

There is a ton of news collector|combinator sites out there in the Internet which provide a greater value in finding new and interesting news than discover. Most of them are better configurable - as in: you can check which sources you want to use - some of them even provide a similar look (but can use the whole screen).
To me "Discover" is a complete failure.

Several - and created a fully owned spin off called Opera mediaworks …

Discover is a 'great' feature, one that nobody asked for and hardly used.
Usefully or not, who cares. It's just a new revenue stream Opera ASA tries to establish.I didn't vote because the browser I'm using (thankfully) doesn't have such a feature.

Actually it is a good idea to access quickly to usefull websites. For example for Turkish content was not inside in supporting country and we have defined some sources and sent to Opera. Afterthat they have published (after 4-5 months ) with adding extra few hundred sources. We thought it would be very usefull but it is now tons of similar and a little bit waste places
As I have said, the idea is good but not like this. For example, I want to manage my sources everytime. At this point a RSS client (like in O12) would be great. If they able t oadd local source support and maybe to manage default source option, it will be great. Otherwise no need to spenmt more time on discover….

That's what bookmarks, favorites or speed dials are for.
Who knows better about my preferences than me? Other users? Opera ASA?
Most people prefer to take their own choices instead of being spammed -
A pointless and wasteful feature. I turned off pre-fetch as soon as I could. It may just about have some credibility on a phone or tablet (waiting for bus reading), but it has no place on a desktop.
-
I use Discover when I have too much free time. Otherwise, I have my own news websites and the rss feeds. I guess it is a great feature only for some people…
-
I use Opera Discover daily as my main source of news information. One of the first things I do when I turn on my laptop/tablet is to check Opera Discover. However, I do understand that some/most people don't like it and, thus, I agree it there should be an option to hide it.
-
I use it when I'm completely bored and unable to do anything useful with my time. Like when I'm too tired to go to bed and such.
-
I've used it a couple of times since I installed Opera blink. It's interesting, although it can't be customized to my needs (I live in Chile). May be in the future it'll become a (sort of a) replacement for feeds. And I agree with some comments above… Useful when you have some spare time!
-
i used it long time ago but i dont like the changes so i switched to others and do not plan to change again
-
I don't use it. I have my own collection of websites that I check often for new content and I would welcome a tool that makes it easier, but Discover doesn't help me with that.
