Media Feature Pack
and my windows is clean install from few days ago.. in chrome and firefox works everything fine i look for media feature pack but.. download size is more than 360MB so why i will install a package like that for something that works perfectly on other browsers?
-
@gh0stzk: Vivaldi cannot afford yet to pay the licensing for various media codecs, etc. to be downloaded with the browser. Hence, it relies on whatever codecs and such you already have on your system. It tries to use whatever Windows-native codecs/apps exist to display media. It would appear that in my Win7 install and in my Win10 installs, all of the necessary media decoders already exist - because I do not have media difficulties in Vivaldi. But anything your SYSTEM is missing is something Vivaldi will not be able to play/display.

... While browsing reddit, I often run into a problem where GIFs/GIFV videos hosted on Imgur don't display when opened directly; the first frame of the GIF is shown, then it vanishes. However, the same GIF will play fine when I view it as embedded media within its related reddit thread, and it doesn't happen with all GIFs/GIFV media. It's also not a problem with Firefox or IE. Here's an example of one of these problematic GIFs:
https://i.imgur.com/2hAoLyA.gifv (here is the reddit thread with the same GIF embedded)
As mentioned above, the direct link works in other browsers. Here is an example of a GIFV that plays fine when opened directly:
FWIW, I'm using Vivaldi (1.7.735.46 (Stable channel) (32-bit)) on a Win7-64 system with Norton AV, and my results duplicate yours exactly. This is true whether my two extensions (Ghostery and Click&Clean) are enabled or disabled individually.
Then, I tested on the same system with Firefox (which in my installation employs the NoScript extension), and the first of your imgur gifv's (2hAoLyA) fails to play even in Firefox. When FF first visits that link, I get a static image of the cat, and if I then temporarily enable site scripting in NoScript, the image area goes black and remains that way. On the other hand, when I test the second gifv (8EIOPdF) in Firefox and then temporarily enable scripting in NoScript, the video plays fine. The point is that the two Imgur videos have some kind of differences in Firefox as well as Vivaldi.

I read what install that package, mediacenter, windows player etc.. i already have on my win 7... but i will install.. i really like this browser.

I'm not sure what the difference is between these two files. Any ideas why this is happening?
They both play here(Linux) but FYI the reddit mp4 is scaled down with a file size of 1.6mb while the imgur mp4 is 8.5mb.
Have you tried reloading the imgur tab once the mp4 has downloaded which may take quite a number of seconds depending on your bandwidth. -

Interesting, I guess the reddit version is "re-encoded" then? If so, perhaps it is just a software issue and I just happen to have the correct software for the reddit version of the GIF and not the Imgur one (still doesn't explain why Firefox and IE don't have this issue, though).

Yeah, I noticed many GIFs taking way too long to load even on my fibre optic connection (80MB baby! ) but refreshing the page after it fully loads doesn't seem to help.
-
No other ideas about this issue? The problem still exists on the current version of the browser.
-
@PaddyM same issue here with reddit. It's stuck on loading gif, but never complete (i'm on VDSL2). Instead of imgur that works fine. The endless loading page on reddit occours also with Fitefox, Opera and Chromium, until i click over the animated loading icon that reminds on the imgur page, and finally works.
I'm on Linux Mint 18.1 (Cinnamon) all updated. -
No idea why but on the reddit page no image gets loaded, either in latest Vivaldi snapshot or in Firefox. Just a spinning icon, no byte gets downloaded in both browsers.
If I click on it, a quickly disappearing image appears then replaced by a imgurl blank page with a clickable "download" and downloading it I get an actual .gif of 50mb.
What's strange is that not even the imgur link with no extension specified
https://imgur.com/2hAoLyA
shows any image or animation, just the empty imgur page with only an ad on top, the description "Meet the cat who knows how to protect its cash" and below it just the number of views.
The 8ElOPdF.gifv displays correctly.
Examining the html pages of both, it shows pratically the same content, it should display a jpg as a static image, and a mp4 or alternatively a gif as animation. -
@iAN-CooG yes, it seems a reddit issue afterall. Something seems broken within the domain, or maybe could be some bandwith saturation/request ?
-
The problem I'm having seems to be different from you guys'. For me, the GIFs in question only work when viewed via Reddit. When I open the GIF directly on Imgur, it vanishes after 1 frame and no further page loading occurs. The GIFs work fine in other browsers, both via Reddit and directly, which indicates to me that Vivaldi is where the issue lies.
-
No problem here either on Win10 x64 for either of the three links.
-
Same issue on Linux Mint. Works in Chromium, Chrome and Firefox.
-
@Gwen-Dragon I'm not sure it is a codecs issue. Chromium is open source and also has issues with DRM. I'm fairly sure Chromium doesn't pay license fees either, but not 100%.
-
@Gwen-Dragon Bingo! Thank you. Deactivating hardware acceleration works like a charm.
-
I upgraded to Windows 10 recently, and the problem I was having seems to have disappeared. I'm confused as to how this made any difference when other browsers were able to play the GIFs on Windows 7 when Vivaldi could not
-
@PaddyM: Windows 10 has a media codec package that Vivaldi relies on. Other browsers, being better funded, buy codec packages and install them with the browser. There is a package you could have installed on Win7 that probably would have fixed the Vivaldi problem, if Win10 fixed it.
-
@Ayespy I think the fact that the problematic GIFs played when embedded in a reddit thread cast a fair amount of confusion onto the issue. It seems to be the case that reddit reencodes the file, rather than simply displays a remote file directly, which is kinda strange in itself. It explains why I was able to see the GIF in one place but not in another.
For what it's worth, I did try installing several different codec packs to try to fix the issue on Windows 7, but I guess I just didn't hit the sweet spot with the correct codec. Is there a list of codecs commonly required for web browsing that Vivaldi doesn't have licenses for? Would be helpful for any future issues like this one.
Cheers.

It would be highly interesting to hear what codecs are installed on a Windows 7 PC where there are no issues with Vivaldi gifv playback.
I have isolated this to a pretty simple test: I downloaded a short .mp4 file from imgur, to be sure the exact same file is served in every situation. I put it here: http://f.id00.net/mp4/V3vk51H.mp4
On FF, this plays on every computer I tested on. On my Windows 10 laptop, it also plays on Vivaldi. On my Windows 7 x64 PC however, Vivaldi just shows the player controls bar (with play button and seek bar), with 0:00 as the time, but no media. Seems either some codec is missing, or something on my computer is in conflict with the codec.
I have tried the various suggestions in this thread, including installing codec packs, removing any suspect codecs I had installed, etc. The MS media feature pack is not installable on a normal Windows 7 setup, it is only for the Windows 7 editions that don't have media player included. Anyway, throughout symptoms have remained the same.
