What search engine do you use?
-
I use DuckDuckGo. Google is trying to take over the Internet and our privacy.
-
The Duck. Also, the ixquick image search is quite good.
-
Startpage - with Opera 12.14 as my default. That should be an option in your poll, many of us use it.
-
Ugly,
I use Opera 12.16 and Startpage works well using this address for custom search (Preferences > Search > Add) :
https://www.startpage.com/do/search?q=%sThe search engine I used for some years and liked most was Clusty (now Yippy) at http://yippy.com . It clusters the results and this helps me because I like structured info.
Now I use Google, but reading here about Startpage made me set it up as default engine; I'll see how it works. Thanks!

You will find after you restart Opera that it has reset your default search engine to Google…. They introduced a change at 12.15 to prevent nasty sites hijacking search engines which has this unwelcome side effect (does it in Opera Blink as well). That is why many of us are staying with 12.14.

Yep, Davews, you're right. I didn't know that… So Startpage should either be put on a sort of "safe list", or Opera should be prevented from downloading Google again, at restart. I guess I'll do my searches directly in the address bar (chosen letter, space, searched term) or use the right-click menu when selecting a word I'm interested in.
Thanks for the info! -
Duckduckgo, for privacy.

All browsers

+1. That's the primary reason I avoided updating to 12.15/12.16, and one of several reasons I don't use Opera >15. I use StartPage as default in 12.14… it sources its results from Google's results, but strips out a lot of the annoying Google-placement junk, as well as being a fully-secured search engine. In FF26, which is now my primary browser, StartPage remains my default engine, since Firefox by design keeps the last-used engine as its default until you use another one.

I couldn't care less what search engine people are using.
However it's interesting to see how Startpage.com managed to get so much confidence.
Since I'm too lazy to write my own thought (besides, English isn't my native language) on this phenomena, I will simply point toward a discussion on GitHub which sums it up quite well. Whatever your preferences are, for whatever reasons, some food for thought can't hurt -
It depends on what I am doing…
Default is Startpage/Ixquick, then Bing.

Now that I have read this I'll be using the Duck.
Thanks for posting a link to this very interesting discussion. -
I use Bing (as does my wife) for several reasons. First off, our son works for MS and we like to keep it in the family, so to speak (i.e. blood is thicker than water). Over the two (or is it three?) years that I've used Bing, I've made about a hundred dollars in Amazon gift cards and my wife has doubled that with her searches (and yes, many of the searches are simply done going through the motions to accumulate the points). Additionally, I like the look of the Bing Page and generally find the information on that start page, interesting. Lastly, the searches have appeared to me to be more accurate than those produced by Google. As for being tracked by the engine, it doesn't bother me. I have no issues with ads that are served up based upon my searches. In fact, they save me a lot of time and the truth is, both my wife and I tend to do a fair amount of shopping online. More than once I've found the tracking ads to have been most helpful.

DuckDuckGo

I always use Google. I use it because it's the only one where I can find hard-to-find stuff. For simple searches, I mostly use it out of habit and familiarity of the page look. And, I am so trained to type "g " in the address field when searching.

DuckDuckGo. Doesn't bubble or track. It's the default search on my browsers.
-
One of the things I've been addicted using DuckDuckGo is the !bangs. I can search other sites like Wikipedia, YouTube, Internet Wayback Machine, etc…
There are lots of other cool stuff outside of just protecting your privacy.

Google and Yandex both.

My default is DDG, but I often turn to Google when DDG fails to give me good relevant useful results.
