Multiples User Profiles
-
It would be nice if the ability to set up multiple profiles was added in settings (as it is in the Google browser) so that multiple users and/or the same user with different accounts could have their saved settings maintained and open their various profiles at the same time.
-
I logged in to post this.
I'm not sure if Profiles are implemented yet but I'd rather ask.
I need multiple Profiles for work. I think I could keep the work profiles on Chrome but I'd rather have everything on Vivaldi. Any chat about this from the devs?

I am not a computer tech and I am leery of messing around with command lines and computer codes.
Is there any plan to put a profile manager in settings, as the one is in Google Chrome, to simplify the process for those of us who are technologically challenged?
-
I would imagine that sync would have to be in place before multiple user profiles are implemented. Otherwise it would be pointless to log in with a profile if you can't have your stuff there automatically. And they would need to build the server for sync in the first place. Then they might add in multiple user profiles.

Vivaldi will not aim to be a "techies only" browser. If a feature is fully implemented, it will be transparent to everyone.

… I would expect that that would be for multiple users of the same machine, typically. Edge cases would involve a single user across multiple machines, but that would be implemented entirely differently.

This is actually a fantastic tip – I was just wondering if there was some way that I could put all my user data over on Dropbox, and then pick it up from all the various computers that I use. And it looks like that would be the way! Now, can I run two different copies with two different user dirs on the same machine at the same time... something that Chrome is not really capable of (if you try to launch a second profile in Chrome, it just opens the tab in the original one instead..)
This should help me make an even more giant tangled mess of all the bookmarks and settings that I've managed to accumulate across 3 or 4 different computers!!! haha
- Edit: Yay! it works!! there's probably a bunch of junk in the User Profile directory that I think I'd rather have on the local machine instead of Dropbox, but for now, it'll work. At least until my Dropbox is full :|

you would sync your browsing data and passwords on dropbox. after dropbox is known to snoop around everything?

Reviving this as a reminder to Vivaldi's creators that this is a desirable feature, even amongst geeks.
I actually use the multiple profile feature on Chrome and other Chromium based browsers I've tried because I work on websites and need to see multiple version of them at once - my admin log in, various levels of user log ins, and the general non-registered public versions. On a more personal level, I have a few blogs on Tumblr that are all separated out by a handful of e-mails so as to not cross the streams and have a bunch of unrelated things all in the same feed, so each one goes into a different profile.
While I'm capable of using the additional string of code on a desktop shortcut, not everyone who wants to use all the other awesome features of Vivaldi is. The lack of multiple profiles was the first thing that hit me as a negative about Vivaldi, as I was getting everything set up for use to go ahead and test it out after being pointed in your direction. It can be a pretty huge game killer for some people now a days, especially since Chromium is known for being perfectly capable of managing it.
Anyway, please consider adding this feature as soon as possible so those without the skill to use the command string in a shortcut or those who just want a cleaner, faster, in browser process can get going with Vivaldi, as it appears to be a much more superior browser system.
Thanks in advance for your time and consideration!

I'll add my +1 for this feature; right now its the only feature missing that keeps this from being my goto browser.

(AFAIK: OS independent. Tested on Linux.)
A somewhat hackish procedure, but I add it as a resource for anyone who cares.
Note: This can break anything, can stop working at any time etc.
Add a profile:
[ol]- Go to vivaldi://user-manager/
- Click [+] Add person in the lower left corner
[/ol]
I have bookmarked the User Manager page for profile switching.
Change name / Avatar:
[ol]
- Select profile from the User Manager page
- Go to chrome://settings-frame/manageProfile NB!
chrome://
notvivaldi://
- Change name and / or avatar
[/ol]
Alternative for the above is to:
[ol]
- Select profile from the User Manager page
- Go to chrome://settings-frame/options-bundle.js NB!
chrome://
notvivaldi://
- Open Console: Ctrl+Shift+I , select "Console"
- Write ManageProfileOverlay.showManageDialog() and press Enter
[/ol]
One obvious drawback is that avatar is not displayed in Vivaldi. One has to sort to other means to distinguish which profile is in use. One option (if you use bookmark bar) is to add a bookmark in the left corner with profile name. Unfortunately there is no (obvious) way to change fav-icon for bookmarks, else one could use the bundled icons for profiles: (Add @2x to end of URL to get double size.)
vivaldi://theme/IDR_PROFILE_AVATAR_1 ... vivaldi://theme/IDR_PROFILE_AVATAR_26
A list of avatar / icon numbers as reference:

@Ayespy said in Multiples User Profiles:

Different users can access as much or as little of its power as they wish. Everyone is welcome; none are turned away. It's inclusive.

@wiwaldy: Does "add person" at the bottom of the page at chrome://settings/search#user help?
-
The multi-user profiles aren't removed from Vivaldi it turns out, it's just not accessible from Vivaldi settings.
There is however a bug than can be exploited to access the Chrome settings where you can easily set up another user profile, it even creates a desktop link.
All you have to do is open this link in a new tab vivaldi://settings/, yep it's the settings page but it's also not the settings page. It does not work when you enter the URL directly since Vivaldi redirects to its own settings webpage. They missed to catch it when people access the Chrome settings via a link though.

Could anyone tell where is the default Vivaldi install path?¿
I Have Vivaldi as StandAlone install.Different paths from %Program Files% on x86 and x64 versions?
It's a question related.

As Seen in another post:
Default Installation path:
x64
C:\Program Files (x86)\Vivaldi\Application\vivaldi.exex86
C:\Program Files\Vivaldi\Application\vivaldi.exe························································································································································
Then, creating shortcuts for each profile it's the easiest way:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Vivaldi\Application\Vivaldi.exe" --user-data-dir="ProfilePath"
A shortcut example:
············································································
Target:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Vivaldi\Application\Vivaldi.exe" --user-data-dir="C:\Vivaldi Tech\Profiles\New Profile"Start In:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Vivaldi\Application"············································································
A test ShortCuts:Vivaldi ··· Test Profile - x64 | Vivaldi ··· Test Profile - x86
Changing the profile name many profiles could be managed:
Base Profile - Test Profile - Work - Entertainment - ...························································································································································
This solution works for me, I suppose the same idea will work for other OS but with different paths.
Chromium Command Line Switches.

But they say: better late than never, right?

I wonder, is the feature implemented now? Thanks.
