Small and fast
-
I am a big fan of small, fast, clever, and efficient bits of software. This pursuit led me to Opera, back in the days when it fit on a floppy disk. It was love at first install. I used to boast "Opera makes my 486 run like a Pentium". So, I dedicate this thread to finding the most impressive candidates in their various categories. I'll start with a few of my Windows faves: FastStone Capture is mentioned by Pesala in another thread, and I'll add FastStone Image Viewer as a contender. Assorted helpful desktop utilities - see Horst Schaeffer's "Little Windows Helpers" http://horstmuc.de/win.htm List yours!

My favorite small and fast is Midnight Commander also called "mc". It's a terminal based file manager. It's small with two panes, fast and with built in features it would take too long to get into here. It's the first application I install on any new computer and possibly the one I use the most. It always works and is always there even if you do not have a graphical desktop available. I run it on Linux, but there's a version for Windows also I believe, but I have never tried to run it on that OS. More here:

I think I've heard of this in conjunction with Commodore disk drives and special cables. I've never needed a file manager for the Linux command line though. The Bash shell has all the built-in file management I need!

I first saw this interface on DOS in the late 80's and later on Windows. It was called "NC", short for Norton Commander. The project is long dead but you can find similar features for Windows today in Total Commander and Free Commander.

Nice list, thanks. I now have more on my "check it out" list.
And here are some more Windows progs from me:
Greenshot - free screenshot tool
Bandizip - I ditched 7-zip when they stopped updating it, and now I use this one. -

Spider Player (tranlated by Google)
A small but nice Winamp alternativ. Perhaps unknown because it is no longer offered since about 2010, but I like it. The Pro-Version (see below allows stream recording. with only one klick. The website seems to be down, but with Internet Archive (Wayback Machine) you can still download it ☛ here!
- Spider Player development has been discontinued. As a result, the PRO version of the software is offered free of charge. Registration instructions are available here: http://spider-player.com/wiki/options:pro

- Processes manager : Process Explorer http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653
It appears to me that the task manager in Windows 8 took some hints from Process Explorer. But I still use Process Explorer.
Autoruns is also useful: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902

I remember NC, but NE (Norton Editor) was what I used used most.
Dealing with delimited files all day I found it the best way to edit columns back in the early 90's. -
Android: OI File Manager. It reminds me of Midnight Commander but graphical.

I prefer http://technet.microsoft.com/en-US/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx process explorer, especially because you can use it from a second desktop, which helps finding some stuff that doesn't want to be found - and it is a really good replacement for the normal taskmanager too.

I know Mark Russinovich's system tools. I've used some of them since a very long time.
I'm still using Autoruns which is one of the most comprehensive tool for this category.
However, I like TaskInfo more than ProcessExplorer which is also nice.
TaskInfo shows you also kernel drivers, even those injected into the memory (like ProcessExplorer's one ) -
Windows Swiss Army knife kinda tool: PowerPro
Don't be fooled by the Win95-ish site look. It runs on Windows 8 too and the GUI blends with the OS, the screenshots in the site are very old.
There's plugins to add even more capabilities and if you really want to know what's capable of, check the help guide in pdf here:
and the release history
