I decided to give it another go today, but unfortunately a new issue presented itself: the dialog now no longer appears at all!

All settings are correct, but I get the following message: Login for outgoing server failed. Server responded with: undefined

I've added a screenshot of what the settings page looks like. Please note that the top email field disappeared after clicking the add account button!

The username fields are left blank in the screenshot on purpose; I did fill them in with the correct username, but deleted prior to taking the taking the screenshot (for obvious reasons)

Finally, just a friendly suggestion: it would be nice if the Vivaldi update pages like (https://vivaldi.com/blog/desktop/update-four-5-3/) would include the handles of those who've reported the bugs and helped with troubleshooting them; I did go through the trouble of looking at the MSFT docs, screenshotting and providing as much info as I could 🥲. To not mention community members that help out at all just feels a bit weird IMHO.

Local backup in your trash can

Losing your data is something we’d like to help you avoid at all costs. Therefore, if Vivaldi Mail has already gotten a local copy of your message, instead of permanently deleting the message when it is no longer found on your mail server we just mark it as internal and put a local copy in your trash. This way you won’t lose any mail by accident. It just stays there until the next time you empty your trash.
 
For example:

I have a message “Gordon” I open it in Vivaldi Mail The server has the rule to delete everything that’s older than 30 days old “Gordon” the message turns 31 days old and is deleted by the server, but…
 
Instead of just deleting it in Vivaldi Mail, we mark it as internal and deleted and you can find it in Trash.

Here’s another example:

I accidentally purge all my messages on a server (by changing my address to a forwarding address instead of a hosted address) All my mail on the server is gone, but…

Vivaldi Mail again does not delete my mail, but rather stores it as deleted and internal.
 
Messages could also end up as local backups in Trash as a result of expected behavior. For example, when you delete messages through another client or unsubscribe from a folder. Vivaldi Mail then cannot find the messages on the server and marks them as deleted and internal. Those messages will also stay in the trash locally until you empty it. It is simply better to be a bit more safe than sorry.

Anyway, this might help: I saw severe filtering issues a while back, at some point my bug reports were all marked as fixed but I still saw the same issues, even with rebuilding the database etc.

I started up a brand new profile and set up the identical filters there, and since then I haven't seen a problem anymore. Over the years of updating and trying things with mail, my database got corrupted beyond repair somehow.

So I suggest you try setting up a second profile with one account that shows the issue you see, copy and paste your filter logic over and then see if the filter magically works or if the problem persists

Thanks so much; good idea which I will try. BTW, my illustrations were to show filter in effect followed by related email in my inbox. I thought if filter matched it would clear my inbox but that didn't happen until I added an action to label as junk. From there I could filter it out with one of the M3 "show" filters at top of the email list. Appreciate your time on this.

When I click on archive, only one message out of the thread is archived.

Try the following:

select a message in thread to be archived press T key to show just those messages in thread Ctrl + A to select all message select the Move to Archive button

There is no shortcut key for archiving

If vivaldi-mail-bin.jpeg appears adjacent to the reappearing message then it is likely Show Deleted Items is selected, as highlighted below.

I cannot be certain this is a Yahoo issue and think it worthwhile raising as a bug in Vivaldi Mail.

Could not reproduce issue with from: header values. For the moment am stumped as to the cause but hopefully others may have better luck replicating issue.

@yojimbo274064400 Well, you're right. It turns out that by performing a number of steps that I would never in a million years do on my own, it can be reproduced.

And this does appear to be a product of Vivaldi's anti-data-loss policies. You can't vanish an email in Vivaldi entirely, no matter what you do on other platforms or clients. You can only completely eliminate it in Vivaldi by using Vivaldi to do it.

@irish66 Do you mean Yandex webmail, at https://mail.yandex.com (or .eu , .ru, etc.)? Or do you mean downloading mail from your Yandex address into Vivaldi's e-mail client?

@presager ah no worries. We just need to understand what you see. "it doesn't work" just is not enough for us to understand what you experience. What have you done so far, and where are you stuck?

Thank you both. I deleted the account, and like mib2berlin says, Vivaldi Mail did give me the option to leave the read mail where it was. I was using POP3 for that account.

When I tried to make Runbox one of my accounts this time, it worked without any prompts. And I was able to add the original Comcast account - the one that then got saddled with the Runbox name - also without a problem.

This time, I established the Comcast accounts as IMAP. I had a traumatic experience with IMAP once, but that was about fifteen years ago, so maybe IMAP and I have both grown up since then. For now, it's all good.

I suppose the only mystery is why VMail assigned the Runbox name to an existing account. While I was setting up the accounts again today, I looked out for somewhere I could have gone wrong and couldn't identify anything at all. Unless somebody else reports it, maybe we could just call it a ghost in the machine.
